Heart Gold

Name: Verity Grace Lily
Age: 11 (just!)
Hometown: Barley

Appearance: When she daydreams, Verity is the graceful lily her name implies, pale and delicate and fragile. She knows, however, that in reality she is a little girl of average height for her age and about average weight, verging on chubbiness that her family kindly assures her is just baby fat. Her fair skin burns easily in the sun, and as she has cotton-candy pink hair and crimson eyes, the total effect is very.... pink. When she dresses up in her best dress, a princesslike concoction of dusky rose chiffon waves, Verity gives the impression of being a low-hanging fluffy pink cloud. Or a ditto.

When she sets out on her journey, Verity is wearing an outfit picked out by her mother, sensible khaki trousers in hardwearing fabric and a dark brown leather jacket over a green cheesecloth shirt, with long sleeves and a wide-brimmed cotton hat to try and protect her easily-burned skin from any stray sunbeam. Verity tried to sew a fabric rose onto her jeans pocket, but she is a clumsy sewer and it is already starting to pull off. There are some badly glued-on sparkles on the collar of her jacket. To try and make her general appearance prettier, Verity often tries to plait flowers into her hair, but her hair, as well as being very pink, is wispy and easily tangled and the flowers are generally dropping out. By the end of the day, Verity tends to get annoyed with her hair for getting in her eyes and pulls it back into a ponytail under her hat. This generally involves several tries, as her hair keeps coming out of her ponytail and she's usually missed a few wilting flowers.

Personality: Verity tries very hard to be the very best she can be. A lot of this involves trying to be as tough and competent as her mother, lovable and popular, as well as being as beautiful and stylish as a vespiquen. She's fighting against her natural tendencies, however, which are to be shy, anxious, badly coordinated, naturally untidy, forgetful, and clingy. Verity worries a lot, and part of what she worries about is that she'll never be the beautiful, powerful, adored pokemon trainer she believes in her heart that she should grow up to be.

Verity studies very hard, doing all the homework that the farm's teacher, Emerance, sets her, and more, excelling in knowledge and understanding, even though her work is messy and, Emerance has told her, shows a disorganised mind. She tries hard at art and music, but she is simply not very good.

Even though Verity's knowledge of pokemon is excellent, she is still the kind of trainer that will consult her pokedex about a pokemon she has seen ten times before, desperately anxious that she may have missed or forgotten some crucial piece of information that she will need in order to win a battle or make a catch. Before setting out on her journey, she read everything she could find on pokemon, the region, camping, finding food, cooking... She reviews the rules before every battle, and is a little slow to make decisions during a match, and inclined to second-guess herself and change her orders, confusing her pokemon. When she loses a match, she cries and thinks she has let her pokemon down by not knowing enough to give the right orders.

She tries very hard to be independent and brave like her mother, but she is clingy and easily moved to tears. She admires her best friend Connie more than anyone in the world, because she thinks Connie is the strongest, kindest girl ever. Verity relies on her machop, Butchette, to protect her, and feels much safer when they are together. The times Verity is strong herself, it is because of her strong maternal instinct. She would do anything for a baby pokemon, or a baby human, come to that. She has a baby brother, Fidelius, and she loves him very much - she is happiest when she has a human baby cuddled into one arm and one of Butterfree Farm's baby pokemon snuggled into the other, singing to them. (Her voice is not very good.) The hardest thing about leaving on her pokemon journey is leaving Fiddie, but she's very happy Connie is there to look after her.

When Verity grows up she wants to be a princess. And a pokemon master. And a famous artist. And an amazon warrior. And a pop idol. And a famous cowgirl.

Biography: Verity is the daughter of Wilhemina Felicity Lily, known as Bill. Bill was an amazon who left her tribe and came to live on Butterfree Farm near Barley and help protect the women artists and farmers living there. She brought her baby daughter with her. Bill is very physically powerful herself, with weathered golden skin, arms honed to rock by doing hard work on the farm and her Machamp, Butch, perfectly reflects her muscular stength and protective presence. How she came to have a plump sunburned crybaby of a daughter is anyone's guess - maybe Verity takes after her unknown father. When Verity was ten-and-a-half, her little half-brother Fidelius (Fiddy) was born. She has not quite worked out yet that Fiddy must have a father somewhere - the all-female farm is all she knows.

Like the other children on the farm, Verity is taught by Emerance, an elderly artist who is very patient with her, but wishes Emerance would put as much talent into organising her work and thoughts as she does in study, She tends to "let" Connie organise her homework, books, pencils, supplies and so forth for her. She's not lazy, just easily overwhelmed. She looks up to Connie very much. When Connie got her first pokemon, a torchic, Verity was overwhelmed by how clever and brave Connie must be to be trusted with a pokemon of her very own. Later, when Verity turned ten, her mother entrusted her with an egg of her own - the egg of the famous machamp Butch! Maybe Verity was secretly disappointed that it was not a more pretty or cute pokemon, but she had a long time to get over the feeling and develop protective tenderness for the egg, so that by the time Butchette hatched, Verity already fiercely loved her. She soon learned that a strong fighting pokemon is a very good choice for a little girl who often feels a bit scared and insecure! She takes Butch around with her when she does her chores, as when she feeds the miltanks, Verity is always a bit scared that they might accidentally curl into a ball and rollout at her.

The worst thing that ever happened to Verity was her very first pokemon battle. She had gone on a trip into Barley with Bill, and a little boy with his first pokemon challenged Verity to a battle. Bill wished her luck, and Verity turned to face the little boy, her knees feeling watery and her heart pounding. When the boy sent out a starly, Verity was very scared, but told herself that because starly was sub-normal, Butchette had a chance. She tried out every move she knew, but the starly just pecked and pecked at Butch, while Verity became more and more flustered and tearful, and started contradicting herself and stumbling over orders. When Butchette became unable to battle, Verity felt like she'd murdered her. She curled up in a ball on the street and howled, not able to stop even when her mother told her she was ashamed of her.

The very next day, however, Verity read and read about pokemon catching, and then went out with Butchette and caught her very own starly. Bill was so proud of her little girl for doing it all on her own that Verity cried again, this time with happiness. Bill suggested she call her new pokemon Courage, because she had been brave in the face of defeat. After that, Verity went often into town to battle the schoolchildren, even though she was always nervous and tended to cry when she lost.

Her most proud possession is her pokedex, which she won from knowing most of all the children at the farm about egg groups. She'd stayed up all night to study!

Verity always knew that in order to stay at Butterfree Farm, one day she would be expected to go on a pokemon journey of her own. Afterwards, she can always come back. She and Connie had always promised to go together, as soon as Verity turned eleven.

On Verity's eleventh birthday, she had a present "from Fiddy". Inside was another pokemon egg, with a message saying "Because you are such a good big sister, here is another baby for you to look after." Verity has no idea what pokemon it is! There was another present, from Bill - a pokemon doll. Bill told her very sternly it was for emergencies and when she and Connie needed to escape from dangerous pokemon, not a toy.

Verity has called it Henrietta and is trying to sew it a pretty pink dress. She's a hopeless case.
