“NYYYOOOOOOO!”

The cabin door flew open, banging harshly on its hinges as Lori Pardare burst out of her allocated quarters and into the narrow corridor of the S.S. Fidona. Cheeks as red as her fiery hair and brown eyes rolling wildly in her head like those of a stampeding Tauros, she hurtled headlong down the passage with reckless abandon. Her scream echoed down the hall, rousing anyone who might be taking a moment in the early afternoon to relax in their rooms during docking or even sneak a nap after lunch.

She sped to the nearest stairwell, grabbing at the railings to pull herself upwards, and away from the cabins below deck, towards the cafeteria and lido. Screams frequented her lips, startling other passengers within earshot every time her vocal chords were able to snatch enough air from her lungs for a strangled wail which followed her to the open deck. Wingull trilled and wheeled above the ferry while it edged close to the dock as crewmen milled around on the dock ready to secure its moorings; both became alarmed to hear the shrill cries coming from the boat but neither expected what happened next.

“WAAAAH!”

One more scream and Lori’s fiery-haired form flew from the railings at the first rope to be secured to the dockside. Creamy arms and legs wrapped around the wide rope tighter than a Seviper’s embrace, stilling the girl’s screams for a moment as she caught herself on the dockline and set to motion almost immediately. Crewmen shouted at the girl to stop, their complaints for health and safety falling on dead ears while the teenager edged rapidly to the ground.

“Hey, you-“

“UH!” Lori shoved the sailor out of her way, her head hunching down as her legs propelled her into a flat out sprint towards the seaside town. Blood thundered in her temples, sweat drenched her forehead and fear fuelled her muscles as only one thought occupied her mind:

*Get it away from meeee!*

*****

Back at Lori’s assigned quarters , a round grey face peered around the doorway with confusion decorating its insectoid features.

“Bug?” It questioned the air with confusion.

PANE: Roxxy Mauden

Roxxy took up as much space as humanly possible, trying to scream “don’t touch me” without saying a word. She was slouched low in her seat. She had one leg extended under the table, resting on the chair across from her. Her bag was next to her, with a white wire trailing out of the top and into Roxxy’s ears. She bobbed her head to the music, chewing on her fingernails as she waited for the announcement that it was safe to disembark. The boat was probably late; the little stunt Tag’s friends had tried to pull back in Barley hadn’t succeeded, but it had delayed the departure. But they did finally leave, and spent the next half-hour or so chugging across the bay to the island. At some point she’d pulled out the map and traced the boat’s route from Barley to the island with her marker. From the looks of it, it was mostly dense forest with a strip of beach near the main city.

Tag had sat nearby, but he was giving off pretty much the same body language, so she left well enough alone. Besides, he was drawing stares away from her, with his radical choice in tattoos and bulky frame. Next to him, she might as well have been invisible. The song currently playing ended, and another one started up, this one just guitar plucking at first. Roxxy dove for the shuffle and hit next a couple of times before the vocals could start; last thing she needed on a boat was a flashback.

Mutt yelped and she glanced down and to her left. Zeta was hovering just out of reach of his jumps, teasing him, and he had tried to set off a Thunder Fang. But he still didn’t have complete control, and it backfired and zapped him. Zeta huffed and zoomed around him while he shook his head, smacking his lips at the strange tingling sensation. Roxxy smiled, leaning down to scratch behind his ears. Although she had still been uneasy being on a boat, having Mutt around seemed to distract her.

“Ok, enough, guys,” Roxxy said, grabbing his and Zeta’s pokeballs from her bag and recalling them both before any more harm came to them. She’d have to make a quick pit stop at the Pokecenter to get Mutt looked at after all those Fury Cutters, but afterwards she had no idea what to do. Maybe she could find another team member, something slightly bigger than Mutt or Zeta that would be able to win more battles, catch more food…

Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted by an ear-piercing squeal, and Roxxy glanced up in time to see a head of red hair disappearing up the stairs. She stood up, yanking the headphones out of her ears and stuffing them into her bag. She glanced at Tag and pointed at where Lori had run, one eyebrow raised. Then, having nothing better to do, Roxxy followed her. She arrived on deck just in time to see Lori running screaming her head off towards the town.

“Oh my God,” Roxxy whispered. She would have killed for some sort of recording device right now.

The gentle rolling of the ferry did very little to calm Tag's fairly turbulent thoughts. Now that the adrenaline from the earlier battle had worn off, he found himself in a deeply troubled mindset.

The ease with which his enemies had found him bothered him. They had pretty much been waiting for him at the docks, which meant that they had some level of intel on him. They had absurdly powerful Pokemon, and they knew where to find him. Surely the four had reported that he'd gotten on a ferry to Fidona. What was to stop them from setting yet ANOTHER ambush for him once they arrived. Could he really risk endangering three more innocents?

But...just how innocent were they?

He cast a sidelong glance and Roxxy, who had comfortably spread herself out. Sure, she appeared to have fairly weak Pokemon, but what if she had been tasked to tag Tag, as it were. What if her headphones had a homing beacon; they didn't need to plant one on him, they just needed someone in his general location. She'd started chatting him up and following him around of entirely her own accord.

ALMOST NO ONE FOLLOWED TAG OF THEIR OWN ACCORD. The tattoos he wore on his face no longer intimidated people away, but seemed to be drawing more people to him. Perhaps it was because he was now so easily recognizable.

His mind flashed, momentarily, to everyone else he'd encountered so far in Furoh, as his mind was wont to do. As he filtered through them, one by one, he realized that people had followed him of their own accord. There was a hole in his earlier logic...he had been...wrong.

Sighing, Tag allowed himself a frown as he sank into his seat. He didn't like being wrong. He especially didn't like proving himself wrong. Yet, as he chanced a glance over at Roxxy, he realized that, perhaps, it was okay that he was wrong in this regard.

Pushing away the cloudy thoughts for the time being, the man formerly known as "The Bane of Blackthorn" contented himself with the antics of Roxxy's Poochyena. Hiding is disappointment when the little pup returned to his pokeball turned out to be a bit of a difficult task, and Tag could only hope that his face had remained at the default 'stoic' rather than 'sad-mopey-face'.

A shrill shriek split the air, and Tag immediately sprang to his feet, hands on Suzu's Pokeball. Roxxy raised an eyebrow, and immediately moved to follow after the Red Flash that had streaked by. While in all probability that it had been Lori, Tag hadn't been entirely sure what he had witnessed passing them on its way off the ship.

He chose instead to move in the opposite direction, to see what had caused the commotion. He looked at the only room with the door wide open; Lori's, unless he missed his guess. Looking down, he noted a little face close to ground level, peering up at him. He did not recognize the face, but...

"You-" Tag pointed, his stern face indicating that he had located the source of the commotion. Casting a clandestine glance from side to side, he looked back to the little creature. "-are adorable." His face softened markedly as he knelt down, scooping the strange little bug Pokemon up into his arms. "Let's go find your trainer, shall we?"

* * *

Stepping out onto the decks, Tag noted Roxxy standing, looking agape at the red figure flailing towards the town. The diminishing figure did resemble Lori, his other random traveling companion. Holding the Scatterbug in his arms, Tag looked out after the screaming trainer.

"There's a story here, I'm sure." he said aloud to no one in particular. Turning his head to Roxxy, he gave a little head nod to the city. "Shall we go see what caused Ms. Pardare's panic mode?"

Lori stumbled into the Pokemon Center, face almost as red as her hair, panting uncontrollably while she searched the lobby for anything or anyone that might help her. Confused pairs of eyes looked her way upon her entry but none made a move to approach her. Swallowingly thickly around her dry gums, Lori trotted to the front desk and hit the service bell repeatedly. There was a long moment before the Nurse in residence showed herself, giving the young trainer time enough to spare the entrance nervous glances as she squeezed a section of her hair tightly in one hand.

“Hello, and welcome to the Pokemon Center!” Nurse Joy addressed Lori quickly, her Stepford-style smile greeting the Center’s latest customer. “We can take your Pokemon and-“

“Take it!” Lori screamed, thrusting a Pokeball at the Nurse with a shriek. The Nurse gave a start before slowly reaching out to take the orb from Lori’s shaking fingers. Lori gasped with relief as the ball was relived of her possession, snatching her hand back to herself quickly as though she had been burned.

“This?” Joy rolled the Pokeball over in her hands with a frown. “But, this is an empty Pokeball.”

“Yes yes…” Lori looked back fearfully towards the entrance before returning her wild-eyed gaze to the Nurse. “But it’s out there… and when it comes back…”

“What is? What’s out there?” The Nurse held out a hand to touch Lori’s shoulder gently.

“NARGH!” Lori screamed, violently pushing herself away from the desk and swatting at her shoulder frantically. The Nurse yelped and swiftly brought her hand back to her side.

“Miss, please calm down.” Joy started. “I’m sure we can-“

Calm down!??!” Lori wailed, her body visibly shaking, “But you didn’t see it!”

“See what?”

“The dead-baby-head-monster!” Lori cried, chancing a look back towards the doors. “AAAARGH!!!! Here it comes!!!!” She screamed, launching herself over the counter and crashing down on top of the Nurse in a tangle of arms and legs. “HELP ME!!!!”

Roxxy nearly jumped out of her skin when Tag stepped next to her to watch Lori wail her way into town. The dude might’ve saved their lives back in Port Barley, but he was still a pretty big guy and every nerve in her body screamed “STRANGER DANGER”.

But she took a breath and rationality managed to win out over base instinct. This time. Tag asked her if she wanted to go see what had made Lori run off like that. In a dress no less, Roxxy thought. Allmighty Kyogre that chick can sprint.

“I thought you’d never ask,” she said, turning her head towards him. “You wouldn’t happen to have a phone or a camera or something, would you? I’m never going to let Lori forget about this, this is amazing.” Amazingly cruel, sure, but information was always valuable, and it helped to have physical copies.

Roxxy pondered punching him in the shoulder or elbowing him or something, like “friends” did, but excised those thoughts. It was a little bit soon for physical contact. She noticed the little gray caterpillar-thing in Tag’s arms and pursed her lips.

The baby pokemon - she could only assume it was a baby, seeing as how Tag had picked it up and he wasn’t dead yet - vaguely resembled the likes of a Caterpie or a Weedle, but it had a huge head and a white collar. She pointed at it.

“What the heck is that? Is that why Lori ran out like a dep - decat - like a Combusken with its head cut off?” Goddamit there was a word for that, but it was too long and filled with consonants.

“Scatterbug!” the worm cried.

“Ah.” Well, that answered the question of what the little tyke was. As for why Lori was so afraid of such a cute thing, Roxxy still couldn’t understand. But she shrugged and pushed off the railing, turning to walk down the gangplank just lowered and onto the dock.

She ran her hands through her hair a few times before she realized, and stuck them in her pockets to twitch against her thighs. Although Lori covered the distance between the port and the Pokecenter in about fifteen seconds in a dead sprint, it took Roxxy (and presumably Tag - she hadn’t bothered checking to see if he was following her, but it was a pretty safe assumption) about a minute at a leisurely stroll.

When she entered, Lori was shouting at the poor nurse manning the station. A second or two later, probably following Tag and the Scatterbug’s entrance, Lori screamed and vaulted the counter, bowling over the nurse.

“Get a room,” Roxxy said. “Arceus and Mew, we’re in public, Lori. Control yourself.” A couple of chuckles followed her as she crossed the few steps over to the counter, to peer at the tangled pile of limbs that was Lori and Nurse Joy. She crossed her arms so that her elbows hung over the edge, and rested her head on her forearms.

“By the way,” Roxxy added, “we found your little cutie pie still in your room. Bad trainer, abandoning it like that.”

Suppressing a small smirk as Roxy visibly started at his presence, he kept his eyes fixated on the diminishing figure that was Lori. He was used to people being startled by him for a variety of reasons, though suppressing his presence had never been one of his active strong suits. Nevertheless, he still happened to scare people just by proximity, his ears still partially rang from the scream Liz Nadira Shir had let out when she first met him back in Baccate.

Roxxy's grin was infectious, and before he realized it, he was smiling too. He shook his head at her question, realizing what a missed opportunity it was in that he didn't have something to record this moment other than his memories.

"I doubt she'll forget it anytime soon." He lifted the little gray caterillar slightly, smiling at the adorable face. "This little one will be a constant reminder, I'm sure."

"Scatterbug!"

It's stupid little voice nearly made Tag drool with delight at the outrageous cuteness of the baby insect in his arms. Wordlessly, he followed after Roxxy as the two made their way towards the Pokemon Center.

Making their entrance with a minimum of pomp and circumstance, Tag walked over to the counter, where he found Lori and Nurse Joy tangled in a heap. Roxxy's snide remarks fell on deaf ears as Tag snarfed back a healthy laugh bubbling inside of him.

"Ms. Pardare, I believe you forgot your friend on the ship." He placed the Scatterbug on the counter, folding his arms as he patiently waited for Lori and the nurse to get back up. After all, he still had to heal his Pokemon as well.

“Abandoned?” Nurse Joy dusted herself off, using the counter to pull herself back to her feet. Lori followed suit quickly, keeping the Nurse carefully positioned between herself and the creature cradled in Taggarty Lee’s arms. The grey insect waved merrily at his Trainer with delight, squirming against his restraints of manflesh-steel to seek the softer ladyflesh-silk that had been presented to him upon freedom of the Pokeball.

Joy’s usually soft smile had hardened into a thoughtful frown, her experienced stare flickering between Scatterbug, Tag, Roxxy and Lori. “Abandoned?!” She repeated again with a raised brow for the flame-haired Trainer.

“No no!” Lori waved her hands in surrender, heat decorating her cheeks. “I didn’t abandon it! I never wanted it in the first place! Y’see, Kino made me take it and I-“

“Hmph.” Joy sniffed with disdain.

“Really! I didn’t catch it! My sister – she’s the one who gave it to me. She knows I don’t like bugs so there must be some misunderstanding and I-“

“When,” Joy held up a stern hand to silence Lori’s tirade, “you take a moment to grow up and think about what you are saying, I may take a look at your Pokemon.” She patted Lori’s shoulder and gave her a level look with unblinking eye contact. “Calm down and take a proper look at that Pokemon before you say anything else.”

With a final dust of her apron and a nod to Tag and Roxxy, Joy bustled away through the door to the operating theatre. Lori looked sheepishly back to the two familiar Trainers greeting her and the thing crowded in the centre of them.

“TA BUG!” The Bug-type held by Tag waved again, rocking his whole body from side to side with glee. Lori winced visibly. Why did that thing want to be around her so much!?

Maintaining a safe distance, Lori gulped down her fears (which took some seriously thick gulping since her mouth was so dry) and edged back around the service counter to face Tag and Roxxy - neither of whom looked particularly happy to see her. She wavered slightly, the ache of sprinting making itself aware in her legs, and offered them a suitably forced smile with nervous glances at the Bug Pokemon. She took hold of her hair in both hands over one shoulder and wrung it within an inch of its life.

“H-hey, guys…” She muttered weakly.

“Yup,” Roxxy affirmed, nodding with her Serious Face on. “Abandoned.” The nurse seemed to take her and Tag’s side, and chided Lori for acting foolishly. Then the nurse told Lori to take a good look at the Scatterbug, and disappeared into a door at the back of the center. Roxxy smirked, and her Glameow-who-ate-the-Chatot grin widened even more when Lori jumped at the Scatterbug’s noise.

Oh what fun Roxxy was going to have, as long as Lori was clueless enough to keep hanging around her.

Surprisingly, after the nurse’s lecture, Lori seemed to pull herself together the tiniest bit. She gathered up the last shreds of dignity left after that vault over the counter and greeted them weakly. With her hands she strangled a lock of long red hair, probably a nervous habit. That habit was part of the reason Roxxy cut her hair so short and kept it that way. She curled her hands into fists inside her pockets, her nails digging into her palms, then spread them flat.

“It’s just a harmless little thing, you big Torchic,” Roxxy said to Lori. “Look.” Taking her hands out of her pockets, she held out a palm towards the Scatterbug, and it crawled onto her bare arm. Its legs, like very blunt claws, felt a bit weird on her skin, but no different than a Wurmple or Weedle. The cute little bug crawled up and over her shoulders and down her other arm, heading straight for Lori.

“Of course,” Roxxy added, brushing a few scales off her skin once the Scatterbug was back on the counter, “if it’s this cute now, then its evolution is probably, like...a double Beedrill mixed with an Ariados or something.” She shrugged, rubbing the back of her neck. “Or it could be something like a Beautifly. Who knows.”

It wouldn’t be that awful and Roxxy knew it, but she grinned all the same. Then she turned and marched a few steps away to do battle with the ID machine again. One fierce fight with her pride later, Roxxy victoriously wrenched a temporary ID from the machine. Apparently the nurse was either busy with a severely wounded pokemon, still pouting about Lori’s reaction, or having a sexual identity crisis, because it was a helper Chansey who came and took Roxxy’s pokemon away.

She placed the two pokeballs on the tray the Egg pokemon held, then leaned against the counter to wait and observe Lori, the Scatterbug, and Tag. But mostly to observe Lori and the Scatterbug.

Tag raised an eyebrow as Roxxy seemed deadset on making Lori look like a terrible person. He couldn't decide whether or not to join in or chide her for doing so, but he maintained his silence, holding onto the little pokemon.

"TA BUG".

Oh that voice. That adorable voice, combined with that doofy face. Tag felt his face slip into what could only be described as "Goo-goo-ga-ga Face". If Lori didn't want this Pokemon, he'd certainly keep it. Even if it did turn into some sort of "Double Beedrill". Even while the thought of a Double Beedrill mixed with some Ariados conjured up some horrifying creature with eight legs with lance-like stingers at the end of each one...in Tag's mind, it still held the stupid Scatterbug face. That was enough to want to keep it. FOREVER.

He nearly whimpered as Scatterbug left his arms, crawling up on to Roxxy, but he managed to suppress it (ie, hide it with a cough).

Not really paying much attention to either of the women, Tag moved over to the computer and called up Edwin over in Blackthorn City. Stoically, he gave fairly simple answers to the ever-chatty Pokemon Lab Tech, and before long, he had placed a Pokeball on the machine.

With a whir and a hum, his pokeballs disappeared in a manner that still confused the hell out of Tag (despite the fact that the rest of the world seemed to take for granted that pokemon could be transferred electronically).

For a brief moment, a panic set in: What if the wrong Pokemon arrived.

Once the Pokeball had been swapped around, Tag popped them open to confirm that his team had been formed correctly, and not whisked off to some other unsuspecting trainer's inexperienced hands.

Ledian.
Bellossom.
Ampharos.
Slowbro.
Froslass.
Togekiss.

He greeted his friends with a sigh of relief, even though only one pokeball had been exchanged, he still wanted to make sure they were all still there. They all looked up at him expectantly, to which he responded with a smile, returning them to their homes for the time being. Moving back to the counter, he scanned his trainer id, placing the pokeballs on a tray held by one of the ever-present, ever-smiling Chansey nurses.

Now...who to use in his match against Maxy Z? He had built up an entire team just to face Water and Fighting types...which made narrowing it down to three even more difficult. He could decide now...or he could wait until he was actually there registering and rely on his instinct.

The latter seemed preferable.

While waiting for his Pokemon to come back, he leaned his back to the counter next to Roxxy.

"Miss Pardare...what are you going to name your new companion?"

*OK, now I feel bad…* Lori inwardly groaned throughout Roxxy’s mocking of her, her fear quieting to a nervous quiver. The crusty bug grinned and purred, waving to get his Trainer’s attention from his spot on Roxxy’s arm. *Maybe that thing isn’t so bad if it’s just a little worm…*

Roxxy’s remark that the thing could turn into a double Beedrill plucked Lori straight back off the precarious perch that she had managed to find on the fence between gross and not-so-gross to place her straight back on the former. Whatever everyone else was seeing, she was seeing something else entirely - her initial description of ‘dead baby head’ wasn’t far off and there was literally nothing fluffy or cute about that sack of scales and multiple legs.

*But Beautifly really aren’t that bad, are they?* Lori wondered, still keeping a safe distance between herself and the bug.*They can be pretty… pretty, I guess…*

“I-I,” Lori started, trying to pick her words carefully, “I didn’t abandon it. Seriously, I didn’t… it just gave me a fright is all… I would’ve gone back for it, really…”

*Would you?*
Lori watched in dismay as the bug plopped to the ground off of Roxxy’s arm and began to inch her way.

“B-but, can you hold on to it for a sec?” Lori asked Roxxy as she fumbled for her Poketch. “I just need to make a quick call.” Lori cursed the girl’s back as she turned away from Lori and her new problem to use the ID machine. The red-head quickly turned her wide-eyed stare back to the Scatterbug and held out a hand as a protective shield. “Stay there!” She squealed nervously. Obediently, the bug stopped its movements and blinked up at Lori with a grin.

“Bug!”

“G-great, now hold on a sec…”

*****

“Kino!” Lori gasped as her sister clicked into the call. Her eyes hand left the spot where the Scatterbug sat patiently but with the call live, she had to turn her back on the thing to give herself even the smallest amount f privacy. “Kino, tell me this is a joke!”

“Oooh,” Kino’s lofty voice trilled through the small speaker strapped to Lori’s wrist, “you finally opened the ball then! Did you freak out?”

There was a long pause as Lori grit her teeth. The pressure between her jaws was enough to rival a Croconaw’s, the sheer force of the bite threatening to crumble enamel.

“Nnno…” Lori’s strangled response hissed back.

“Liar!” Kino’s tone was blunt and incredibly patronising. “You probably cried!” The elder sister’s laugh cut the air like a knife. “Well, I hope you like him – he’s a very rare and special Pokemon from the Kalos region. I have a contact there who sent me one just like it a little while back and thought it would do you good to broaden your horizons with the selection of Pokemon that you train.”

“What?” Lori uttered.

“Oh, come on, Lor! We all know you’re into cutsie stuff, preferably furry, and comfort zones don’t do anybody any favours – they just make you lazy and fat.” Kino went on, the sound of her voice carrying the sinister smile that she was undoubtedly wearing. “So, take that Scatterbug and train him until he evolves all the way – he’s not going to let you down, I swear.”

“But Kino, I-“

“But nothing,” the once-Champion snorted, “I didn’t get it wrong with the Snivy and I haven’t got it wrong with this one, either. Listen, there’s an appointment I’ve got to get to so I can’t stay - remember what I said about that guy you were with and let me know how that Gym match goes, ‘kay?”

“Uh, OK?”

“Great! Knew you’d see it my way – catch you later, little sister.”

CLICK

Lori blinked. What the hell was that?!

"Miss Pardare,” Tag’s voice snagged back Lori’s attention, ”what are you going to name your new companion?"

“Oh, bugger…” Lori muttered, glancing back at the thing still watching her all googly-eyed. *Apt…* “I guess I don’t know yet… Let me think on it, ‘kay?” She swallowed hard, trying to put on a brave face in spite of the embarrassment and nervousness she felt around the duo that had witnessed her apparent overreaction to the little worm. “First I’ve got to get that Gym Badge, then we can worry about names.” She looked back at the bug again, the shock of its presence already far weaker than it had been previously. “Deal?” She asked it, her breath catching in her throat.

“Ta Bug!” It agreed happily.

Lori called someone on the Poketech, evidently her sister going by the name she shouted into the phone, and Tag swapped out his roster. Briefly, Roxxy’s eyes narrowed at the tough-looking trainer’s decision to release all his team members here, in the not-uncrowded Pokemon Center lobby. But when he put them back almost immediately, she relaxed again.

He came over and leaned against the same counter she was leaning on, and she moved a few centimeters to the right to give herself a bit of breathing room. She picked at a stray thread on her hoodie around her waist, waiting for the forced chitchat, but it seemed that Tag wasn’t interested in conversation, so she relaxed again. The redhead finished off her call, and Tag asked her what she was planning on naming the little Bug-type.

“How about Demon,” Roxxy muttered, hiding her grin and her words behind a hand and a cough. Lori didn’t seem to have heard, and said she would name it after her gym battle. Roxxy had nearly forgotten about the gym, but now she remembered reading the small blurb on the mainland about it.

“Well,” said Roxxy, pushing off the counter. “I’m not interested in getting a shiny new badge - got enough of those taking up data in my PC already - so I think I’ll just scope out the area while you keep freaking out over that double Beedrill in the making.” As she spoke, the helper Chansey approached her once again, offering up the tray with her two pokeballs on it.

“Thanks,” she said, and the Chansey dipped in a curtsy and left. Roxxy wasted no time in releasing her two partners, and stuffed the Pokeballs into the pouch while Zeta made herself comfortable on her usual perch. Mutt barked, running first around Roxxy’s ankles then around Tag’s before returning to his owner when she called his name. Zeta played with a few stray strands of Roxxy’s hair, tugging on them gently with her wings.

“I probably won’t be leaving anytime soon,” she said, swinging her bag around so it rested on her back again, “so feel free to track me down and let me know how much you got your ass kicked, carrot-top. Peace.”

With that, she and her pokemon swept through the glass entrance and out into town.

"Ta Bug!"

Demon seemed an entirely inappropriate name for such a cute critter, Tag thought to himself. Something like...Kawa, or Poji, or Eiji, or Nami...he had to stop himself from going through his usual nicknaming technique. The little bug was not his, and he didn't particularly feel like trading any of his beloved roster for the little cute one. Not today. Not before a gym battle. Possibly not ever, but definitely not before the gym battle.

Roxxy announced her intentions, then swept out of the building. The former Dragon Trainer's sharp eyes followed her as he went, noting that she'd only displayed a Zubat and a Poochyena; such a combo hardly seemed fitting for a gym battle, especially against Fighting types.

Though he was one to talk; he'd sent a poison and a poison/grass type up against a psychic type and a dark/flying. He wasn't one to talk about always playing to type advantage in a gym battle.

But after his loss to Chloe, he felt it important to rack up a win, which meant playing to any advantage he could get at this time.

At the same time, Roxxy's bit about her badges taking up space in the PC both piqued his interest and confused him slightly. He pulled out his little case of badges, still jingling with the sheer multitude of badges from, now, five different regions. Perhaps he was just old-fashioned. Old-fashioned, but just shy of pinning them on the inside of his clothes. (He had done that early on when he was a younger trainer, flashing them proudly at every opportunity. He nearly had the worst panic-fit when he realized that one had fallen out, as pins were wont to do.)

"Ms. Pardare." Tag turned to his fellow challenger. "Shall we head to the gym? I heard rumour that there are a bunch of traps we must overcome before facing the gym leader...so we should get started as soon as possible."

Lori stuck out her tongue at Roxxy’s back with a petulant pout. Her hair was most certainly not carrot-coloured! It was crimson as a sunrise, fiery as a volcanic eruption, passionately powerful in its radiance!

*How dare you?! You… you…*

“Ms. Pardare. Shall we head to the gym?” Tag’s rumbly voice dragged the younger Trainer’s thoughts away from the swiftly exiting chestless manface *Oh, now you have a comeback?!* and back to the present predicament Lori now faced. Tag’s continued description about the traps leading to the Fidona gym was not news to the rookie in the slightest – she’d overcome those challenges once before and had subsequently lost her match against the leader in about thirty seconds flat.

Lori gulped.

“Y-yeah, sure.” Lori agreed, feeling her nerves tremble at the thought of not only Maxy Z!’s muscled form in the arena but also the deadly obstacles that they’d have to cross to reach him. She tried to steel herself as best she could, reminding herself of the fact that she had beaten the pitfall challenges once before and could do it again, especially with all the training she’d been doing.

“I guess we should get started, huh?” Lori muttered, shouldering her bag and looking back down at her Scatterbug. “Time to go back in the ball.” She hefted the green and white globe, aiming it down at the grey worm purring softly back at her with merry acceptance of his confinement. “Return, now.”

*Deep breaths, Lor – everything is going to be fine.* Lori reminded herself as she and Tag left the Pokemon Center side by side. *You’ve got it this time. Just remember the strategies that we agreed on the boat and don’t forget what Kino said. We can definitely do it this time – just keep your cool and stay focused.*

“The gym’s this way.” Lori nodded left. “Let’s go.”

PANE: Roxxy Mauden

Once Roxxy was out the door, she made a hard right and slipped into the gap between the Pokecenter and the next building to take a few breaths. Zeta nudged at her earlobe, concerned, but Roxxy shook her head to stop her. She was fine, really; there was nothing wrong. It was just that her hands were shaking and she was tired all the time even though she slept more than ever and she wasn’t eating much anymore and battling didn’t particularly interest her nowadays and - She bit her tongue to make that train of thought come to a screeching halt. No good dwelling on her stupid tiny problems; there was a town to be explored.

As far as towns went, Fidona could have been worse. Roxxy wandered through the streets, Mutt sticking close and Zeta literally sticking to Roxxy’s shoulder. There were a few tiny local shops, a couple of houses and not much else. The Gym seemed to be the main attraction in this place, but one glance at Mutt growling at his own reflection in a shop window threw a possible gym challenge right out the window. At the very least she’d like him and Zeta to evolve before she even thought about challenging any gyms. If she was ever going to do that in this region.

She whistled and Mutt ceased Intimidating himself and trotted back over, tongue lolling with a burning desire to please. Roxxy, however, ignored him, choosing instead to peer inside the shop at what was on display. It appeared to be a book store, and there was one book whose title caught her eye: “Simple Magic Tricks.” On the cover, a disembodied pair of hands was pulling a scarf from one coat sleeve. The price tag on the bottom right of the cover was not exorbitant, so she went inside.

A small bell chimed as the door swung open, but other than that the place was still. “Hello,” chirped the woman at the cash register. “Let me know if you want something.”

“Uh, yeah actually,” Roxxy said, sauntering over to the counter. The woman’s smile slipped a bit, but not nearly as much as most people’s did when they saw Roxxy with Zeta hanging off her head and Mutt nipping at her heels. She pressed on, regardless: “I’d like that book in the front window, about magic tricks.”

“Of course. Do you want a bag?”

“Nah, I’ve got one.” She swung her bag forward and dug through for the money she’d recently won off that thug back in Barley while the cashier fetched the book from the window shelf. Roxxy handed over an appropriate amount of money, and the woman handed her the book, along with some change. “Come back any time,” the woman said.

Roxxy just nodded and headed back outside, stuffing the book inside her bag as she did so. She nudged Mutt out of the way as she stepped outside, squinting slightly in the sunlight. It sure was a pretty day; she picked at the stray thread on her sweatshirt and continued to wander. Her mind snapped back into her body just in time to notice she was about to venture into the forest surrounding the city. She huffed in irritation, turned to go back into the city - and stumbled over something that had gotten underfoot when she wasn’t paying attention.

“Goddamn it!” she said, barely catching herself before a nasty tumble. “Mutt you weird-ass pooch, what are you-?” But Mutt was sitting too far from her feet to have tripped her up, calmly licking his stomach. She turned her head to see what had tripped her up, and her heart nearly stopped dead.

An Electrike.

Following behind Lori, Tag silently followed along as they traveled to the renowned Taminagi Palace. His hands unconsciously fiddled with the pokeballs on his belt, as if he were somehow worried that they would magically vanish from his belt again.

He watched the earnest young trainer in front of him, watched as her flaming red hair flounced around carelessly while she walked. He wondered, especially after their battle earlier, along with her inability to even stand the presence of a bug-type, if she would be able to handle the dominating presence of a Gym Leader.

"Lori...would you like to go first?" he asked, curious. Did she want to step up to the plate right off the bat, or did she want to watch Tag battle it out, thus gaining some insight into Maxy Z's style. Did she even notice things like battle style, or was she really a full on novice? Snivy and Piplup seemed unevolved, and the former of them seemed rather unreliable in battle. Did she have any semblance of a strategy, or was she going to run in guns blazing...

Oh crap. Did he have any semblance of a strategy? He couldn't use his usual tricks, as he had found out against Chloe back in Gigarte. The Gym Leaders compared notes, it seemed, so he was fully prepared for Maxy Z to know his moves in advance. Yet, he had a few new techniques to play out, a few more combinations he'd been plotting. It felt strange going to a gym match without Bachi. He only hoped that his old friend wasn't holding it against him...though in all actuality, he probably was.

As the entrance appeared, Tag looked to Lori once again.

"Do you know anything about this place? I hear they've got some nasty traps and tricks waiting for us before we even get to the Leader. What've you heard?"

“Go first?!” Lori gave a start, swallowing a gulp of embarrassment. “No, no! No need for ladies first or anything like that!” She insisted, casting Tag a wide grin along with shooing hands. “How about you go first to show us how it’s done – you’ve already got Badges, riiight?”

How she had thought so fast on the spot, Lori would never know, but it seemed to work. Well, at least Tag went quiet for a little while as he thought it over. If he came back with an insistent plea of chivalry to give her the honour of first dibs, she’d really be stuck though.

*Why, though?* Lori demanded of herself as they went. *Why shouldn’t I go first? Sure, it would be better to do what Kino said and take as many notes as possible before taking on Maxy Z! again but I’ve gotten better than before… right?*

She rolled over the strategies that she had been planning from last time and her experience battling at the Petropolis Grand Invitational. On the battlefield she had made it through the early rounds and, although Apache had played a strong part in it, she felt much better that Pipster and Triss had both gained new attacks and experience that would be invaluable for her rematch. She suspected that the combination of Grass and Water Pledge was key to success for the battle but was finding herself doubting that she could rely on it completely since Tag had fought through it so simply.

Tag roused her out of her thoughts once more to ask her if she knew anything about the Gym.

“Do I know anything?!” Lori squeaked, a desperate itch clawing at her neck. She fumbled at it nervously.

*Why hide it from him? The Gym Leader will ‘out’ you, anyway!*

“No, nothing!” She sputtered out, still grinning like a buffoon. “But it’s a jungle gym so I’ll guess pit fall traps, ravines to swing across, exploding Golems… you know – the usual!”

*You are such a bad liar!*

“C’mon, let’s get moving!” Lori faked her excitement with an enthusiastic pump of a fist.

PANE: Roxxy Mauden

As soon as the species’ name entered her mind, Roxxy’s chest seized up. She took a step backwards. Her head spun. Her heart raced like a wild Rapidash. She threw one arm out behind her, found a brick wall, dug her fingers into the indentations. The Electrike was picking itself up from where she had knocked it over, growling to itself. Sparks danced over its green-and-yellow skin. It felt like an Ekans had circled itself around her chest, and now every breath was a battle. The tips of her fingers tingled where they were pressed against the wall and curled into a fist at her side.

Breathe, she tried to tell herself. Deep breaths. You’re okay. It’s just a little runty Electrike. It hasn’t noticed–oh hell it’s seen you. The Electrike was indeed looking right at her and growling menacingly, hackles raised. Roxxy heard a chirp from her shoulder. Zeta seemed unsure of what to do. On one hand, her trainer seemed downright terrified of what she’d determined to be an Electrike. But on the other hand, the Zubat was terribly weak to Electric-type moves. So she stayed where she was, although she bared her fangs right back at the Electrike.

“Z-Zeta,” Roxxy managed to spit out, bringing the hand not clinging desperately to the wall behind her up to rub against her Zubat’s head. She took another step back as the Electrike moved forward, and her back hit the wall hard. Something in her bag dug into the flesh near her shoulder. She winced. Looking around, she noted distantly that no one seemed to see her predicament. Or, if they did, they were ignoring her. Just another freak having a goddamn panic attack because of a stupid little Electrike. How pathetic.

Mutt had been a bit preoccupied for the past minute cleaning a bit of dirt off his paw. Now, with one final lick, he raised his head and smacked his lips. With a soft whine he caught a whiff of fear absolutely pouring off his trainer. Some deeper instinct told him the yellow-and-green pokemon in front of her was to blame. The same instinct raised his hackles, curled his mouth into a snarl, and had him leap to defend his trainer with a growl and a sharp “Yen!”

“Trike, elec!” the Electrike snapped back. Roxxy’s heart slowed a fraction, and she was able to suck in enough oxygen to clear her head.

“Mutt?” she said. The Poochyena cast a look back at her, confirmed she was physically unharmed, and went back to menacing the Electrike. Without shifting her position, and doing her best to avoid upseting Zeta, she reached behind her and pulled out her pokedex. A couple of smacks against the wall later, she had Mutt’s move list. It seemed he’d learned a few new moves from the battle she’d had against that boy; Sand Attack and Bite.

“Okay boy,” Roxxy said, swallowing against a throat as dry as Hoenn's Route 111. “Let’s do this.”
