Legendary Eggs

Every single Legendary Pokémon has an egg programmed into the database. Therefore, they are all obtainable and functional. Legendaries cannot breed at all, except for Manaphy (but when you breed Manaphy, you get Phione, which does not turn into Manaphy). And yes, Legendaries can be shiny too. Every Legendary egg has the Very Rare rarity. There are two ways to obtain Legendary eggs.

Method 1: The Lab

Don't bother camping in the Lab for a Legendary egg. The chance of one popping up is incredibly slim, but several legendaries are more likely to show up due to being summons (read about treasure chests later in this post). Your best bet is to just hope that you get lucky one day when looking in the Lab.

Method 2: Events

The more reliable of the two methods. Every now and then (usually once a month), I shall post a pinned and closed thread in this section of the forums with some sort of ridiculous title (I get bored and it attracts attention very well). In this thread I shall go in depth on how to obtain an egg during one of these events, say what dates the eggs shall be distributed, but I will not always state what exactly will be handed out. The eggs are handed out randomly, and there is always one set shiny during an event, though there can easily be another shiny that isn't the set one. Event eggs do NOT appear in the Lab.

Novelty Eggs

Novelty eggs are very special. They are of the Novelty rarity, and will only appear in the Lab on certain events (which will be specifically stated if it will happen). Some Novelty Pokémon can breed more its kind (though there is only a slim chance of this happening), whilst others do not breed at all. Some Novelty Pokémon are made to represent a holiday or time of the year, whilst others are a unique Pokémon found in a video game or from an episode in the Animé. Novelty eggs are sometimes bred by staff so that they may spread, thrown into the Shelter by staff, or they will be given out during Events just like Legendary eggs. EVERY Novelty Pokémon has a shiny form.

The Little Man

The Little Man is a rare occurrence on the site. Sometimes, when you are viewing a page on the site, a small sprite of an old man may appear in the header. This is the Little Man. He will disappear if you go to any page that allows you to drop one of the Pokemon in your party (PC, abandon, Pokewalker, Daycare). If you click the Little Man whilst you have a free space in your party, you shall receive a MissingNo. egg (which is of the Novelty rarity). If you click him whilst your party is full, you get nothing.

Treasure Chests

Treasure Chests (they come in five colours: Red, Blue, Gold, Silver, Black) are similar in behaviour to the Little Man and are also a permanent addition to the site. Except, Treasure Chests (barring the Black one, which gives something else) contain one of 12 Summoning Items that can be used to summon Legendary Pokémon egg that relates to the item in the Lab. This egg can then be claimed by anybody, so it's no guarantee that you'll get it. A total of 13 Legendary Pokémon can be obtained through this method (Dialga, Palkia, Heatran, Cresselia, Kyogre, Groudon, Latias, Latios, Giratina, Shaymin, Lugia, Ho-oh, Rayquaza). If you have an Itemfinder, your chances of finding a Treasure Chest are increased slightly.

When you use a Summoning Item, the egg now IMMEDIATELY shows up in the Lab, and you are the only one who can see and claim it for the first five minutes it is there. After that time, it becomes visible and obtainable by anybody else looking in the Lab. All summoned eggs from December 13th 7:51 EST 2009 onward will now indicate that they were summons by having a "Summoned on" line instead of "Egg laid on".

Note that even if you summon an egg, during those first five minutes, you may not necessarily see it immediately - you may need to reload the page several times before it shows up, as lab eggs are displayed randomly. Also, the egg will not appear at all for you if you already have three very rare or novelty eggs in your party, as all users are limited to that many at any given time.

Please don't make suggestions for Summoning Items.

Manaphy Egg

It's just like the Little Man, except you see a small blue egg instead and it gives you Manaphy. Simple enough, yes?

Black Treasure Chest

The Black treasure chest differs from the other four, because it contains only one item. This item is called the Corruption Orb. Certain eggs are affected by it. When you use it, the egg is transformed and all of the maturity it currently has is erased (it keeps all of its stats, though) and it "starts off" with 0 maturity again. The eggs that can be currently be corrupted are Lugia, Groudon, Dialga, and Bidofo. If you have an egg that can be corrupted, "Corrupt egg" will be added to the Options drop-down box. Using the Corruption Orb is the only way in which to "Corrupt" Pokemon

Egg Vouchers

Another way to obtain a Legendary or Novelty egg is by exchanging an Egg Voucher for one, which is a one-time use item that creates an egg of your choice in your party. These items cannot be obtained normally, however, and are only distributed for certain events. They cannot be sold.

Small addition to treasure chests to hopefully clear up some misconceptions people have regarding summons.

Added in info regarding Egg Vouchers, not that there's a whole lot to say in the first place.
