Vincent leaned over the railing of an opulent ferry the size of a cruise liner to see if Barley was still in view. He saw nothing but the deep blue sea. In fact, the vast emptiness was almost intimidating. Vincent didn't remember why he and Joey chose such an elegant ship over a rental Pokemon. Joey must've changed his mind, he assumed, though where they got the money was a mystery. Vincent felt an arm grab ahold of his shoulder cordially.

"See, isn't this fun? Aren't you glad you didn't stay in boring ol' Barley?" Sebastian asked with a smile so large, it almost seemed unhuman. "I think I saw a few of your friends down by the pool."

Vincent turned to face Sebastian but as he did, the hand disappeared from his shoulder and there was no one where Sebastian should've been standing. However, Vincent found himself in a bathing suit and ready to jump into the swimming pool that was before him. He lept off the edge and made a huge splash upon entering the water. Vincent saw Squirt and Wally playing under the surface with very ambiguous shadowy figures. Without the usual worry for his Pokemon, Vincent left them to their fun and broached the surface.

"Do you mind? You got me wet you bozo!" said a voice Vincent hadn't heard in a long time. "I can't look beautiful while tanning if my hair's messed up!"

"I second that notion!" another familiar voice said.

Victor Bays and Victoria Brooks, in bathing suits undoubtedly desgined especially for them, were lying side by side on beach chairs. Vincent's childhood friends removed their expensive sunglasses in unison and glared at him, but couldn't prevent a smile from emerging.

Vincent received a splash of water to his face as yet another friend joined the party. "Where have you been, Vincent?" Vitalis Lagos had jumped in the pool with Vincent and was wearing his trademark full-body wetsuit, fully armed with retractable fins. Flipping back his wet, blue hair, Vitalis said, "We've been waiting for you!"

A sudden noise pierced Vincent's eardrums. It sounded almost like a foghorn, but not quite. Storm clouds gathered, forming clusters the blocked out the the sun and sky.

"Where's Joey?" Vincent asked.

There was no answer. His friends merely stared at him with blank eyes. Their pupils and irises were missing. The bizarre noise sounded off again and rain poured down, followed by lightning and thunder. A Pokemon Vincent recognized as the legendary Deoxys skated on top of the pool's surface toward him. Though he tried, Vincent could not move. For a moment, everything froze in place, including the rain, and Vincent relaxed. It did not last for long though. A few seconds later, time moved again but was twice, if not more, as fast. Within ten seconds, Vincent witnessed the destruction of the entire boat by several Hyper Beams. Absentmindedly sitting on a piece of flotsam, Vincent witnessed one last event. His friends and Pokemon were standing single-file on the ocean's surface and the Deoxys faced them. Joey stood at the front of the line and was the first to be killed with a Hyper Beam.

***

"Vince! If you want any of my pancakes, you better get here right now!"

Vincent's forehead was beaded with cold sweat, tears were streming down his cheeks and his heart was pounding. He could now add Deoxysphobia to his list of fears.

Joey awoke early that morning in the dilapidated motel by the sunlight streaming lazily across the bed. He laid in bed and thought back to the night before. The dinner at Vincent's house was a nice change, although he was now hungry for breakfast. He sat up in bed, almost in silent anger at what he almost did last night. Stay a night in such a house that denied his background so overtly? Who do I think I am...? Joey shook his head in an attempt to clear it. After all, wasn't he here to start anew? Build a new life and identity for himself, so he didn't have to be trapped as this person? Pulling the covers away, he turned to a sitting position on the side of the bed and put his bare feet on the carpeted floor, which was pleasantly warmer than he expected. Upon standing up and partially making the bed, Joey walked over to the mirror and peered in. What he saw was a sorrier look than he expected. He washed, dried, and brushed his hair in the decidedly not luxurious bathroom. He looked considerately better, but still he wasn't quite satisfied. Now he traded the emerald pajamas for his daily clothes. His silver dog tag gleamed brilliantly after a good shining with Joey's shirt hem. He checked his pokemon and pack before heading out.

***

While the motel hadn't been much, the surrounding streets were bustling with the glory that is Barley. What Joey first sought out was a way to make money. Releasing his pokemon from their confines to let them exercise, he proceeded towards the park.

It looked extra festive, and walking closer, he could see that something was going on. It looked like a small fair. Many booths were set up and pokemon decorations were abound. His favorite one was a pokemon balloon in the shape of a Ledyba. Next to it, a round Spheal balloon was swaying in the wind. Vincent would like that...Joey considered getting it for him. Sort of like an apology for running out last night.

He bought it and tied the string to his backpack. Jet started clapping once he saw it. The Seel bounced around happily, the Fair really brightening him up. Claw looked apprehensive and never went far from Joey's hold. Kimiko occupied herself with looking at all the prizes available to win, but also stayed close to Joey. The trainer and his three pokemon walked on among the booths.

Further up ahead, there was a poster falling off a tent-side, and it was advertising some sort of contest with obvious cash prizes. Joey was thinking it was exactly what he needed. Perhaps he could do some money-making before meeting up with Vincent later, if Vincent indeed decided he wanted to go to the island.

Joey kept reading the poster while Jet found out how fun the dunk tank was, and Kimiko was playing with the balloon, inflating herself to float up to it, and back down. Claw laid his head down against Joey and cooed softly while trying to shut out all the noise and commotion.

Vincent stood in front of a full-length mirror, inspecting every minute detail of the boy who stood past the glassy membrane that separated the two. Almost every feature of the boy was perfect. Each of the inky black strands that crowned the boy's scalp was in its proper place. His glowing complexion was free of the many impurities that polluted the average teenager's skin. There was not a single wrinkle to be found on his polo. His blue-black jeans were tailored to fit his exact dimensions. The lace on either side of his shoes matched its counterpart precisely. It would seem that this boy was the rose of aesthetic perfection from head to toe, but Vincent saw the major flaw the boy had. It was not a flaw that could be fixed with an iron or a trip to the tailor. It was a flaw that lay past the immaculate exterior. Looking deep into the boy's eyes, Vincent saw the weak spirit inside. Fear. Anxiety. Distress. Hidden behind that flawless mask. Vincent stared at the boy but could not accept him as his reflection.

Five long fingers gripped his shoulder, startling Vincent. He was so engrossed with the looking glass, he had not noticed the lanky figure enter, though one could see the doorway in the mirror's parallel realm.

"Hey, Vince," Sebastian said. "I wanted to say goodbye before you left." The two were looking at each other in the mirror, rather than facing one another's actual faces. "If you ever happen to pass through Barley, stop by to see me... And um... That's all I suppose. I'm kinda bad at goodbyes..." Vincent accepted Sebastian's farewell with a silent nod. "Oh, and this came in the mail." Sebastian handed Vincent a small box and left the room.

Vincent immediately noted the envelope's unusual weight, suggesting there was something inside besides a letter. He recognized the pastel blue stationary from the desk of one of his very close friends, Pokemon-professor-to-be Vitalis Lagos. Upon opening the envelope, Vincent found a necklace with water enclosed in a blue teardrop-shaped pendant. The letter that came with it read:

"Heard about your adventure. Hope this comes in handy. I used to wear it for good luck, but a water-type Pokemon would make more use of it. That's 'Mystic Water' in that pendant. It supposedly comes straight from a small pool in the Temple of the Sea made of fresh water that oddly enough doesn't mix with the salt water around it. I've been dying to look into it, but I haven't found that elusive temple yet. I hope to hear from you sometime soon! I know you'll be doing something astonishing over there that we'll hear about in Kanto. Just don't find the Temple of the Sea. I want to be the first to do that. =P
-Vitalis"

Vincent clutched onto the necklace and a feeling of hope flickered inside him. Someone believed in him. He tied on the necklace and grabbed his bags. He was ready for his adventure.

***

He was not ready for his adventure. Vincent had not made it to the docks yet and was already exhausted. He carried two large luggages and a backpack that seemed ready to explode. Not being one to travel very often, Vincent did not know the importance of traveling lightly and choosing only the belongings that were most useful to bring. One luggage was filled entirely with a small collection of books, the other with clothing. His arms were very tired from carrying around so much weight and his stomach was beginning to growl. Fortunately, as he passed a fair going on in the park, Vincent saw a bench right next to a hot dog stand without any line. Though he normally detested junk food, he gave in to his hunger and purchased the unhealthy sausage. Vincent sat down on the park bench and enjoyed the hot dog. Seeing many other Pokemon walking alongside their trainers past the many booths of the fair, Vincent let out Wally and Squirt.

The two Pokemon were enthralled with all the excitement going on around them, though their trainer could do without it. Vincent was wondering what was the big event that deserved such festivities when Wally began clapping in joy. There was a balloon made to look like a Spheal being tugged through the crowd. However, what was most interesting was the person tugging the balloon, not the balloon itself. Joey had decided to take the same detour that Vincent did.

Joey had continued walking around, looking at the simple, yet wonderful, fair that was taking place all around him. This is the kind of place that families and friends come to, he realized, which only pronounced his feeling of being out of place, considering he possessed neither. The Spheal balloon was caught by the wind and gave a tug-tug on the backpack strap Joey had attached it to, almost as a reminder. Well, maybe one friend. He continued on through the crowd, holding onto Kimiko. Claw was flying around, within visual range of Joey, fluttering against the wind and soaring among all the nooks and crannies of the fair. He wasn't a very strong flyer yet, but Joey envied him all the more, wishing he could fly as well. How wonderful it must feel....

After about another 15 minutes of walking, Joey was beginning to show some signs of weariness. His right knee felt like it was going to give out, and he was getting hungry. Okay, so he wasn't an athlete. He began looking for some food carts, and saw one along the outskirts, near the boardwalk and docks. A hot dog stand. Coool...., Joey sighed inwardly. Claw saw where he was headed and fluttered over to the hot dog stand, landing on it, and thoroughly scaring the vendor. Joey jogged up and apologized fervently, and let his Igglybuff down to the ground while he picked up his Pidgey. After ordering a hot dog with ketchup, he was alerted by Kimiko. She had hopped up onto a bench and cooed loudly at the black-clad boy sitting there. Turning to look him full on, Joey saw that it was Vincent. Small world.

Joey went over and unceremoniously sat down next to Vincent, who was munching on a hot dog as well. He was also wearing something new around his neck, an item that Joey recognized as a Mystic Water, rumored to improve the power of water techniques when held by a Pokemon. Vincent looked only slightly shocked to see him. He finished eating and sighed, enjoying the sunlight. Then Joey remembered something. He unstrung the Spheal balloon from his backpack, and made a lasso type loop at one end, and slipped it over Vincent's wrist before he could protest. "For you," Joey said tersely, then sat back to tell Vincent about all the things going on at the fair.

Seeing that Vincent showed even the slightest interest, Joey got up, his knee feeling better, and started walking off to some spots he remembered that Vincent might like, or at the very least, could convince him to join in on. Vincent, not wanting to be left behind, clutched the balloon looped around his wrist, and walked hesitantly behind Joey, who stopped to wait for him every now and then. Wally and Squirt followed behind joyously, with Jet joining them, Claw resumed flying, which he didn't get to do often, and Kimiko took her usual place in Joey's arms.

The first place they passed was a small stage and two Loudreds channeling music as loudspeakers. Three small pokemon were dancing on stage, a well-known dance called Caramelldansen. On the left, was a cute, friendly-looking Charmander, and on the right, was an equally cute and happy-looking Chikorita. In the middle, appeared to be the star, a Squirtle that was really putting its all into its dancing. This Squirtle was visibly bigger than the young Squirt of Vincent's. Music pounded through the Loudreds on either side, who also did their share of dancing.

"....Caramell will be your guide..."

The Charmander and Squirtle did the traditional dance with arms waving in the air, and bouncing back and forth, while the Chikorita kept pace moving her front end back and forth to the beat.

"....Dance to the beat, wave your hands together, Come feel the heat, forever and forever..."

This Charmander had a springy bow-tie, and a lovely sheen that pronounced its well-being. When the song came to the "heat" part, it would spin and wave its tail at the audience in a twirl. Joey gave the Chikorita a silent kudos for tolerating the close proximity to a waving fire type with an open flame.

"....Listen and learn, it is time for prancing, now we are here with Caramell dancing!..."

While the song played all the way through, Wally and Jet were having their own fun spinning each other around in front of the stage, and the audience members were having just as great a time as watching them and the real performers. Kimiko wiggled and inflated to get of out Joey's grasp and floated down to the ground, where the two seal pokemon welcomed her and danced around her as well. Vincent's Squirtle danced as well, copying the one on stage. All in all, the pokemon were having the time of their lives, except for Claw of course who chose to be anti-social.

When the song concluded and every audience member clapped their hands, Jet and Wally staggered around and ended up rolling while their dizziness and emotional high fell back down. Kimiko also inflated and rolled around, for the fun of it. Squirt, Vincent's Squirtle, ran up onto the stage and made friends with the other one that had been singing. People were welcome to interact with the performers once the song had ended and every crowded around the Charmander complimenting the shininess of its eyes, and everyone praised the crispness of the Chikorita's leaf. Gathering up their Pokemon, Vincent and Joey continued walking along the boardwalk in the park.

Everything was decorated beautifully, including the next stage where a Pokemon skit appeared to be taking place. From what Joey could see, the Pokemon themselves were the actors and characters of the story. And they were talking. What. No, he could see now that the Pokemon were moving their mouths as if they were talking, but people standing just off-stage with microphones were the real voices. They seemed really in-sync, which meant these were well-trained Pokemon. Amazing, Joey thought. He stopped to watch, and the whole group hesitated, which led to them watching the story unfold on stage.

~~~ * ~~~
A humble and peaceful Cyndaquil is holding a white rose, and sighing at its beauty. It places the rose upon a flowing river and watches it flow downstream. A relaxing, harmonious music is played, until the rose reaches the end and falls off-stage.
Then the music turns into a dramatic suspense, when a Tyrogue and Elekid come dashing in, dressed as highwaymen. They announce that they've come to steal the fire mouse Pokemon's home for their own, and mold it to their liking. Enraged by having its beauty disrupted, the Cyndaquil stands ground on all fours, defending its home. In a single, fluid tensing of the muscles, its flame erupts from its fur, startling the audience, and adding intimidation to its small physique.
The Tyrogue and Elekid attack, a very well choreographed movement of fighting and electric skills that only appear to be harming the Cyndaquil. An epic battle pursues, but it is as graceful as a dance, with the Cyndaquil dodging every attack, dancing out of reach at the last second and counterattacking with spouts of flame. However, the two villains beautifully sweep in and one after the other, deliver an ending blow, and just as gracefully, the Cyndaquil falls away, appearing bruised, and the flame dissipates in a sense of anti-climax.
Just as its struggling to get back up, the music grows in a sense of hope, and suddenly appears, a hero! The music escalates as the hero leaps in. It's a Lotad, and many audience members are struck with awe and curiosity, wondering if this play is actually a farce.
The Lotad holds a battle stance, and keeps an unwonted eye contact concentration on the enemy. It lunges forward and launches an astounding Water Pulse technique, eliminating the Tyrogue and Elekid in a brilliant defeat, as they're pulsed off-stage. The young Lotad, the hero, looks proud, and helps the Cyndaquil to its feet, and watches a white rose fall from a nearby bush and into the flowing river.
~~~ * ~~~

Everyone clapped and cheered, some people with tears in their eyes. Joey looked to Vincent to see how it affected the younger boy, but he couldn't make heads or tails of his expression. The Tyrogue and Elekid got up from off-stage and shook the water off and went back on-stage. The Cyndaquil shook itself, and the black, dusty make-up that was the "bruising" came off. The four pokemon held hands, sort of, and bowed each way to the audience and went back-stage to where people could interact with them.

Gosh...this a real community fair where everyone is so at ease and accessible, Joey thought. They continued along, taking in all the sights. They passed a Mr. Mime Barrier show, with Mime Jr. juggling acts included, a comedian and her Chatot as an act, and an aspiring rock star with his own Loudred and Electrode. Joey, Vincent & co. were coming up on the booths now, with people selling all sorts of things. Shards, heartscales (which caught Vincent's eye), and evolution stones (which caught Joey's eye).

Each boy looked at their respective items, and Joey saw a misty looking purple stone with veins of black running through it. The vendor told him, "You have a good eye, son. That's one of the rarest ones. It's called a Moon Stone, and is rumored to come straight from the Moon. This particular rock was found in Mt. Moon of the Kanto region, where Clefairy dance around it every Monday night." Joey picked it up and felt its weight and texture. He was always passively fond of rocks. He clicked open his PDA and looked up information on Igglybuff's evolution, Jigglypuff. With a moon stone, it could immediately become a Wigglytuff. He liked the looks of that. What he didn't like the looks of, was the Moon Stone's price. However, he did have enough, and a little bit left over, so he acted on impulse (he hated himself for it) and bought the Moon Stone. He usually liked to pride himself on being analytical and thoughtful, but life just didn't accommodate those traits.

Joey and Vincent kept walking among the booths, seeing even more stuff for sale. Contest accessories and some PokeSeals were being sold in one lady's booth. The Pokemon of the group were getting an eyeful as well, with Jet seeing several toys he would love to have. Seeing this, Joey leaned down and patted the Seel's horn lovingly, and whispered, "Another time. I promise." He just hoped it was a promise he could keep to the envious Seel. Kimiko wasn't old enough yet to feel any sense of possession, and Claw just plain knew better by his life in Orre.

What came next was the part that Joey had been waiting for, the mini-game sections. It started off with the Mechanical Tauros ride, where not so much of a line had formed rather than a mass of people, cheering on the current contestant. With a sudden spin and buck, the guy was flipped off headfirst onto the heavily padded arena around the machine, which immediately halted until the new contestant was ready. The timer above the Mechanical Tauros read 12 seconds, which warranted some applause from the audience. The vendor working the Tauros controls announced into his loudspeaker.

"Special Promotional Offer Now! Last a minute on the Tauros and win a cash prize!" The amount was listed on the side of his control box, and it was more than enough for Joey to try. Vincent hung back, but Joey elbowed his way through the crowd, and gracefully mounted the Mechanical Tauros. Immediately, it was much more intimidating actually in the seat, than it was from on the ground. As per the rules, the controls-person wouldn't start until only one hand was on the strap, and the other was in the air. He chose to keep his right hand on the strap, and slowly started to raise his left. He knew how this machine worked. The controls-guy started moving the Tauros slowly, back, forth, forward, rear up, rear down, getting Joey used to the motion. He had an entire 60 seconds. No need to throw him off immediately. There would be ample opportunity once he was about to win, let him get that close. Then bring out the real ride.

Joey knew the trick was to anticipate and move in harmony with the machine. Same principle as riding a live Tauros, and although he may not have the experience, he knew the trick, and the experience was quickly racking up as he shifted his weight and twisted his body to match the Tauros's movement. It was getting a little faster now, and his heart was pumping, being sent into a spin or a jolt every now and again.

The timer was nearing 30 seconds, and it was picking up speed, twirling quickly one way then reversing 3/4 of the way around then jumping into a buck. Joey had to keep on his toes, figuratively speaking. He knew to grip with his knees and keep his heels down.

45 seconds. The next 15 would be the longest of his life. The controls-guy knew it was his job to keep someone from winning the money, and half-regretted being so easy on him thus far. He was getting closer.

50 seconds. Just ten more. The Tauros spun in 3 circles rapidly then cut short and jerked to the left, nearly losing Joey. Think 3D, he told himself.

55 seconds. The machine was going crazy now, jerking diagonally and spinning at the same time then diving into a buck. Joey was spun to the outside, leaning greatly and hooked by only his inside leg along a spin. Not a good position to be in, as anything could upset his balance now. He used all his strength to fight his instinct of leaning more to the middle, which only pushed his hips only more out of balance, and he finally righted himself along the outside spin, which stopped like hitting a brick wall along the vertical line and then shot forward, catapulting his exhausted body off the Mechanical Tauros and helicoptering him onto the heavily padded arena, which at that moment appeared to be the ideal place for a nap.

The timer read..... 1.00.37. 1 minute and 37 nanoseconds, and flashed bright gold and made an alarm that snapped Joey back into consciousness. "We have a Winner!" the Vendor announced, starting to think the young man had deserved it. Joey couldn't quite accept the money yet, because he didn't know which of the 5 Vendors appearing before him had the money. His vision was blurred, and then he saw 5 matching Seels smiling at him. 3 Pidgeys hopped closer to him. Good, his vision's getting better, but his stomach is still rotating at 60 mph. Finally, 3 Igglybuffs converged into a single one sitting on his chest, looking down at him. He closed his eyes and waited for the nausea to pass. A crowd was starting to form around him, blocking Vincent out. Wishing he had more time to recover, but disliking the attention at the same time, Joey staggered to his feet and walked a few feet away, soon forgotten as the next contestant mounted the Mechanical Tauros.

Thinking he had to throw up, he almost had to crawl over to a garbage can before sitting on the ground, knees brought up to his chest and leaning against the rather clean garbage can. His Pokemon, concerned, surrounded him and eyed askance of his condition. He assured them all with pats that he was fine. Surprisingly, the feeling passed quickly and he regained composure, in time to see Vincent coming his way. When Vincent got within range, he asked the youth, "Now what mini-game do you want to play?"

BLARG

All of the shows left Vincent longing for some spotlight, though he knew he'd never go through with such a thing. He could already picture himself having a nervous breakdown on stage and the audience laughing at him and unsatisfied spectators throwing rotten fruit at him and the curtains falling on top of him, smothering him a velvet-

"Hey look at that booth there!" Vincent said in an attempt to cut off his imagination before it mentally scarred him. The stand he pointed to was selling many colorful and exotic items that the vendor had supposedly brought from his adventures in the other regions. Interestingly enough, the man had a collection of heartscales of all sizes that Vincent began comparing with that of his own. With a smug smile, Vincent glazed over the largest of the heartscales. The man's did not even compare with Vincent's. The other merchandise was not of much interest to Vincent, except for that of another vendor's stand. There was a beautiful crown formed of ice that resisted the intense rays of the midday sun.

"That's a rarely occurring ice that will never melt," the vendor said, noticing Vincent's interest. "Men have scoured the highest of peaks in search of this type of ice, while others have gone as far as Antartica for a piece." The vendor had hooked Vincent and was reeling him in. "They say it improves the abilities of ice-type Pokemon, like that adorable Spheal of yours." Then any captivating power the item had over Vincent was gone in a flash.

"That wouldn't last an hour with Wally!" Vincent said with a snort. "It might never melt, but does it break?" While the vendor stammered for the right words, Vincent thought. Still, it is interesting... "How about a trade?" Vincent offered five moderately sized Heartscales that the vendor snatched right out of his hand. The pink scales were much larger than the other vendor's scales and would attract the customers who were at the other stand.

As Vincent made the transaction, Wally whined out of jealousy. Vincent turned around to see what Wally was complaining about and saw his Squirtle getting a shellpainting. "Squirt! That's not free!"

A louder voice called out, "Special Promotional Offer Now! Last a minute on the Tauros and win a cash prize!" Vincent hung back to chastise Squirt. He would never go on a mechanical Tauros anyway. Joey however, shoved his was towards the beast.

Meanwhile, Wally was watching Vincent's Spheal balloon intently, trying to figure out how that seal had learned to fly. It didn't seem to have a specific technique or form, which perplexed Wally.

Vincent hadn't even noticed the minute go by and was shocked when he heard cheering from all around him. Mumbling that everyone in Barley should have their larynx removed, he went and purchased some bubble seals from a booth. It wasn't until a few minutes later that he noticed Joey over by a trash can.

Vincent approached Joey wondering what on Earth had happened to him. Joey's hair was tossed and turned every which way. Though Vincent stifled his laughter, it seemed that Joey caught on. Joey fixed his hair and related the story that had happened right under Vincent's nose,

"I can't believe I missed that..."

"Now what mini-game do you want to play?" Joey asked him, moving on.

"Well, actually I'd kinda like to get rid of this baggage," Vincent responded. He had been tugging his large suitcases around the whole time.

"And how do you intend to do so?"

Vincent walked over to the Whack-a-Diglett minigame, where a familiar lanky figure with blue hair was adeptly playing while a dreamy-eyed girl watched, longing for an enormous plushie. Vincent tapped the man on the shoulder, interrupting his game. "ARGH!" Sebastian grunted. "You just ruined it! I was about to- Vincent?"

"Bye Sebastian!" Vincent left his two bags at Sebastian's feet and dashed around the corner where Joey was waiting. "Mission accomplished!"

"Hey! What?!"

"Quickly! Quickly!" Vincent ushered Joey into the House of Mirrors before Sebastian caught up. Both had to suppress their laughter. It seemed to be the first time that Vincent was actually having fun in a very long time. It was also the first time that Vincent didn't stop in front of a mirror to fix his hair. He and the gang zoomed past every glass panel, oftentimes bumping into one thinking it was actually a pathway. The whole team, Vincent, Joey and their Pokemon finally stumbled upon the exit and stumbled all over each other, emitting a playful syphmphony of laughter.

It took a lot for Vincent to open up, but it seemed that the environment, the people and the very atmosphere had helped him reach that point. He knew his hair was messed up, but he didn't touch it. He was enjoying himself too much to care.

The team to just about every minigame in their sight. Vincent miserably failed at every one and Joey wasn't doing much better, but they were losers together and received many small consolation prizes, things like rubber Psyducks made in China.

---

"I'll get that Octillery plushie if it's the last thing I do!" Vincent cried as he played the Ekans Ring Toss for the seventh time. Joey tried to hide the Spinda plushie he had won by solving some wooden puzzles at another stand. The puzzle formed a Pichu at first but after much thought and manipulation of the pieces, Joey had made a Raichu.

The attendant at the stand checked to see if her boss was around and then told Vincent as his rings flew right past the Ekans, "Here, just take the Octillery, kid. You'll be livin' on the streets at this rate."

"Huzzah!" Vincent yelled triumphantly. It actually wasn't much of a yell, more like slightly louder speech, but for Vincent's typical volume, it was a yell.

The seven of them shared a funnel cake Vincent had bought, getting powdered sugar all over the place. While passing the watergun race game, Joey noted the time. "We've been here for quite a while."

"Are you ready to go?" Vincent asked. Squirt moaned and Wally followed suit, leading Jet and Kimiko to do the same. Claw was silently perched on Joey's shoulder. "We probably should head out to Fidona like planned."

Sweet Team

Joey scooped up his groaning Seel and Igglybuff and nuzzled them. “Be good, or we can’t come back next time.” They sighed in defeat and picked up their regular cheerful attitude. Claw remained complacent, but Joey felt he was more cheerful than usual as well. The day of fun was really good for him, but it was getting late. Vincent was right. They should probably check out the ferry.

Joey recalled Claw and Kimiko to their Pokeballs, but let Jet stay out. The other two were looking weary, but Jet still had plenty of energy to burn. Plus, he was having too much fun with Wally, admiring Squirt’s shell painting and looking wonderingly at the Spheal balloon. Jet was explaining rather matter-of-factly to young Wally how it could fly, using Kimiko as an example. Wally then tried sucking in a lot of air so he could float too, but all he accomplished was losing his grip and rolling around, making Jet laugh at his expense.

The group started walking out of the Fair and towards the docks, except one last booth getting ready to close caught Vincent’s eye. It was a purple and pink fortune-telling looking tent and the impromptu sign next to it read sloppily, “Name Rater”. Vincent said, “Hold on a minute,” and took a closer look. Joey followed suit and ducked into the tent with Vincent, who beckoned his Squirtle to come up front. Inside the tent there was faint incense burning, which bothered Joey’s senses. There was a heavily table-clothed violet table stretching across the width of the tent.

On the other side of the table, was an ominous presence, a shadowy figure. He leaned into the light and spoke in a husky voice. “So I take it you’re dissatisfied with one of your Pokemon’s names? Perhaps that Squirtle of yours?” At the mention of him, Vincent’s Squirtle jolted and looked at the man, trying to see some features. Vincent was starting to withdraw, but Joey put his hand against the boy’s back to keep him there, and then gave a slight push.

Remembering what brought him there, Vincent spoke up, trying to mask the quiver in his voice. “I think…th-that Typhoon would be a great name for my Squirtle. “Squirt” is just getting too old, and now I have to admit it feels a little childish, although I did name him as a child…” Vincent looked sheepish while the Name Rater contemplated this name and scrutinized the Squirtle. Then he spoke, “That is an excellent name! This Squirtle shall now be known as Typhoon! How fortunate for you.”

Vincent scurried out with Joey close behind before he lost it. Such an intense person, that Name Rater guy.
Now Joey and Vincent were walking towards the docks, with Vincent cuddling his newly-named Squirtle, and they both looked joyous. The rest of the Pokemon followed behind in also cheerful succession. They reached the docks quickly, having not been far away. There were masses of people milling about, and the docks were busy with sailors and sea captains within sight. Sometimes cargo was being loaded and unloaded on and off ships, and other times the cargo was the many passengers going on pleasure cruises.

Joey was fascinated by the sight, even though he was in a similar scene not too long ago upon his arrival into Barley. Vincent looked tense, but not like he was new to the scene. He had been in Barley longer than Joey, and Joey knew that. Vincent lead the way to start boarding one of the pleasure ships, until Joey pointed out a well-promoted sign before one of the ramps. It was a colorful sign, but stayed mostly in the dark end of the color spectrum, most likely due to its theme. In big, bold, golden letters stretched across the top, it read, “STARLIGHT CRUISE TONIGHT”. In smaller, yellow letters on the left side, it said, “Starts soon after sundown, Be there, or Be square!” The picture in the background of the letters portrayed the Cruise ship all lit up at night on the sea with what was probably meant to be partying going all around the ship. Another group of people standing behind Joey and Vincent were excitedly discussing this coming-up Starlight Cruise and reminiscing about how awesome the previous one had been.

Joey turned to Vincent and said, “Well, it appears we have a few more hours. What do you want to do until then?” It was now Vincent’s turn to point opposite the Starlight Cruise sign where another promotion was set up. It featured the local practice Contest Hall. Apparently, there was a special intro class for a couple hours tonight. It appeared to be just enough time before the cruise. In fine print near the bottom, it said that there was a prize for participation. The two young trainers looked at each other and nodded, silently agreeing. If anything, it was something to do.

*~*

These same two trainers arrived before the immaculate Contest Hall, the breath of intimidation in the air. Joey recalled Jet into his Pokeball. The Contest Hall had the ribbon-like symbol of the Coordination League over its entrance that reminded Joey that there existed something bigger than him, not in a physical sense either, but upon second glance something felt off about it to the Pokemon owner. Like it wasn’t very…substantial? Qualified? It felt so…impromptu? Less than what it should have been. Joey then realized why. It looked like it had once been a basic warehouse, much like the ones in Pyrite Town. The skeptical boy then questioned the professionalism of this establishment.

Joey pushed open the door without knocking, supposing that no one would be assigned especially just to open a door. It opened into a smallish room, apparently meant for just secretarial services. Behind the desk there was a rather business-like man with a sour expression on his face. He looked up when the small group entered.

“Names.”

The two boys each in turn introduced themselves.

“Joey Sweet.”

“Vi-…Vincent Waters.” Typhoon placed a smooth paw gently against his trainer’s leg to comfort him.

The terse, male secretary spoke up again after writing on a piece of paper on his mahogany desk. “You must be here for the intro class. Please proceed to the Green Room.” The secretary finished by looking the two boys up and down. He seemed satisfied with Vincent more so than Joey. Was he looking at their clothes? He opened his mouth as if to say something, but Joey rushed Vincent on, not wanting to endure a reprimand for clothing choice.

Joey kept his eyes down on the floor, watching the various direction signs. Some were looking dirty, or were starting to peel. They should be replaced soon, Joey thought. Then he scolded himself for such a trivial thought. Why am I even thinking this? Is there really nothing better to think about? No…it’s because that there is something more important going on here, that I’m trying to steer my mind away from it…, Joey started realizing some traits about himself. They arrived to the Green Room, and while Joey didn’t notice, Vincent tsk’d that the supposed Green Room was actually more of a beige hue than anything.

It had some tables set up with different treats here and there. There were small egg-shaped pieces of bread, and on a folded card next to the plate it was identified as “poffins”. Beside those were small cubes, with a matching card that labeled them as PokéBlocks. What really caused Joey to pause was a beautiful bouquet of flowers placed on table, with several more around the room. He ran his finger along one of the petals. It felt so soft, moist, and full of life. It made him tingle.

Vincent leaned in to look. “Those look just like Shaymin. They’re Gracidea Flowers. Very rare….” He too touched one of the vibrant petals. This Pokemon didn’t mean anything to Joey. He’d never heard of it, and coming from a Desert region, grass was a rarity itself.

The two boys kept walking around to all the different displays, one of them featuring a gaggle of gadgets from all the different regions, a lot of them being new to Joey. Vincent explained the PokéNav, since it was indigenous to Hoenn.

Everyone stopped when a grey-haired man in a blue tuxedo called for attention. “It's a pleasure to meet you all. I'm Mr. Contesta, chairman of the Pokemon Coordination League. I believe you’re all here for our Coordination Intro classes.”

Everyone in the room had their eyes on Mr. Contesta but Vincent's line of sight was aimed slightly higher. Vincent was staring intently at the portrait hanging above Mr. Contesta's head. The frame held a photo of a girl holding a Skitty decorated with a large ribbon, a couple who had apparently started off in the same practice hall and became one of the region's most renowned coordinators. Mr. Contesta was relating the story of when the girl first came in through the doors Vincent an the others had just walked through, which seemed to have some inspirational tone to it, as if the students were supposed to feel as though they could accomplish anything since this mundane girl had gone on to do such wonderful things. Vincent however was not absorbing any of the words flying through the not-green Green Room, like his companion. No, Vincent's focus layed solely on the approximately 4 and half degrees that left the portrait askew.

"Now if there are no more questions, we'll proceed with the class," the host concluded. Vincent felt the urge to tell him that the frame was crooked, but decided that it was irrelevant, though it bothered him. The group, consisting Vincent, Joey and about 8 others, followed Mr. Contesta to an oblong table with different displays of sorts. Vincent stayed back and pretended to be admiring the girl in the photograph and quickly fixed the frame's position.

"Now each Pokemon has a basic appeal, but by feeding them PokeBlocks, or poffins if you prefer, you can increase their specific appeal," Mr. Contesta explained as Vincent rejoined the group. "For example, if I wanted to enter my Pokemon in a Beauty Contest, I would feed it blue PokeBlocks. I like using PokeBlocks more than poffins, but that's jut me. They taste just like Starburst!"

Vincent wondered if PokeBlocks were ever intended for human ingestion and if they really tasted like Starburst. He looked over at Joey, who seemed to be enjoying himself. Most of what was being said wasn't news to Vincent though and he found it a bit boring. His younger sister would watch Pokemon makeover shows and televised contests. Not only had he learned the technical details of a contest, but also how to match your Pokemon's skin tone with the right accessory.

"This device here, the PokeNav, can monitor your Pokemon's condition in the 5 categories that Pokemon are judged in, which are coolness, beauty, cuteness, smartness and toughness." Mr. Contesta was now passing around the PokeNav for all to see. Vincent already had one in his backpack, though it had occured to him that he never purchased the app for the Furoh map. If he were to pull his out right now, the map would show Hoenn and the text "Unable to Locate".

Another thought occurred to Vincent then. "If he's the chairman of all this coordination business, shouldn't Mr. Contesta have more important matters to attend to, rather than instruct a bunch of novices?" Most of the class went by with Vincent pondering on trivial details until the time came for the trainers themselves to practice. Mr. Contesta then released a Masquerain from gleaming Premier Ball. "Victoria has a Masquerain like that... But she has custom PokeBalls I think..."

"Vincent," Joey said, nudging him. "Bring out a Pokemon."

Vincent silently did so, choosing Wally. Typhoon's trouble-making tendencies might cause Vincent and Joey to miss the ferry.

"There are poffins and PokeBlocks on tables all around the room," said Mr. Contesta. "I've organized them by catgory so there's no confusion. If you paid attention, you shouldn't have a problem figuring them out." Vincent walked over to the table with pink delectables. The poffins seemed to interest Wally most, most likely because he had never seen them before. They didn't make poffins in Hoenn. "After your Pokemon has had one or two snacks, try on some accessories and then come on down to the stage so we can have our mock-appeals round."

Everyone in the room was dressing their Pokemon with gaudy accessories that would give a veteran coordinator a nightmare. Noticing this, Vincent boldly chose to enter Wally without any accessories, much to Wally's disappointment. The little Spheal had been eyeing the sparkly glitter that another student's Poochyena was drenched in. Now standing on the stage, which was merely a foot off the ground and not much of a stage by any standards, Vincent waited for Mr. Contesta to judge Wally.

He watched as the boy next to him awkwardly commanded a few moves that was from a dazzling display and listened to the advice Mr. Contesta had to give. Vincent then felt nervous as the host turned his head towards him. He didn't like the feeling of being on any stage, especially when there was someone critiquing him. He was always afraid of being judged and yet he had put himself in a situation where the whole point is to be judged. Vincent kept his focus on the flowers on the table across the room to prevent an embarrassing breakdown.

"And this is...?"

"Wally," Vincent answered without averting his gaze. He could not help but notice the expression on Mr. Contesta's face though. Vincent could already hear what the judge was to say. "How can you expect to enter this Pokemon in a contest? You haven't done anything to him but make him fatter! We take contests seriously here and if you're just here to waste my time, I won't have any of it! Do you have any idea how-"

"Brilliant!" Mr. Contesta cried out. "This boy has exemplified the statement I said earlier! If you take good care of your Pokemon and feed them enough poffins/PokeBlocks, you can sleep through the whole competition and still come out on top!" Wally, in fact had fallen asleep and Vincent hadn't known. "There is no need for glitter if your Pokemon is appealing enough as it is! In a higher level of contest, you'll have to work harder at your display, but this bold statement is enough to get you through a standard level contest. Good for you! What was your name again?" he asked, shaking Vincent's hand vigorously.

"Vincent."

"Nice work, Vincent! Your Spheal is just absolutely adorable! Now then, let's move on to the battling portion of the competition," said Mr. Contesta. "There are potions here for your convenience so don't be afraid to use them."

Vincent turned to Joey and smiled, glad that they had come.

While everyone was getting ready for the Appeals round, Joey was busy taking Kimiko around to the various tables where equipment was laid out for practice purposes. He picked up a ball capsule and looked through some seals that held promise to accentuate the Igglybuff’s cuteness. Closing the capsule around Kimiko’s Pokéball and applying the seals, the young-looking trainer recalled and released the baby Pokémon with different variations, testing them out. He finally decided upon a design of some Heart Seals and one Song seal that lined up to produce a small swirl of hearts inside a bigger swirl that smoothly blended into a tornado of hearts while a song note bursts out the side. Kimiko seemed particularly enthralled by this design set too.

Before they were rounded up to appeal, Mr. Contesta instructed them to watch some video clips showing a montage of various appeals. In one, a boy was singing with a Butterfree, and in another, a Seel was flipping a ring of ice produced from an Aqua Ring. Joey considered his Seel and quickly dismissed the idea. There was no way he was graceful enough to pull off the stunt. Then it occurred to the trainer, shouldn’t Seel naturally be graceful? Perhaps Jet was a late bloomer. The montage of various clips ended, and now the students had an idea of what an appeal should look like.

Joey looked around for Vincent to ask him what he would be doing with Wally, but he was further away in the crowd and by the look on his face Wally was getting a praising. Then he caught Vincent’s eye and the boys smiled at each other, Joey perhaps with a little less confidence. Making sure Kimiko was ready out of her ball, he tried out a few ideas. The only two moves she knew were Sing and Charm, so it wouldn’t be spectacular, but Joey had to try. He walked off to a less crowded, open space and began practicing, lots of trainers around doing the same with their Pokémon. A little ways away, a Ponyta was prancing along a Fire Spin, and a Croagunk was punching furiously with glowing poison fists. Joey took a deep breath, and turned to Kimiko.

“Okay, start by singing, lull the audience into relaxation, but once they start dipping into sleep too much, pull back with a quicker tempo,” the young trainer said to his Igglybuff. In the back of his mind he fought away the incredulous notion taking place before him. He didn’t know a thing about singing! Joey remembered the various contestants during the contest clips and how confident and glamorous they looked, and realized that he was slightly out of element here, but he didn’t have much of a choice right now. While he struggled internally, a beautiful melody sprung forth from the small baby Pokémon, which attracted the wrong kind of attention.

“Okay, Kimiko, turn-a-bout and finish with a Charm attack,” Joey stumbled. It sounded good, and Kimiko certainly did her part in making it look good. Without a stumble of any sort, she spun gracefully around and ended in a joyful bound of exuding many pretty hearts while bouncing about excitedly. While the scene may have seemed heartwarming to some, Joey suddenly heard a voice ring out behind him.

“Nice Pokémon, Fairy Boy!” Joey instinctively ignored his attacker and just stared straight ahead, refusing to turn and look. He started to walk away when the offender walked in front of him, barring his way. He was an arrogant looking boy with a matching arrogant Raichu (Rai Rai!). Oh great, Joey thought. Quickly scanning his and Vincent’s respective Pokémon, he realized that they were all relatively weak to Electric types. Knowing this, he just quickly turned about and used his size to maneuver through the crowd and lose the bully. The last thing he wanted was a confrontation. There wasn’t far to go, but luckily Mr. Contesta had everyone line up for Appeals round. Joey hid near the back of the line against the wall, and made himself scarce until his name was called.

Joey's Appeal Round (click to show)

Joey had lost track of Vincent and the tactless boy in the crowd. It was people like him that made Joey detest the human race. He quickly recalled his Igglybuff into her Pokéball and hurried off the wrong side of the stage to a back storage room. After carefully climbing over various equipments, he made it across the other side to a door that led backstage to the practice stage. He barricaded both doors with heavy equipment, and finally in an exhausted sigh, he slumped against the dusty door, brought his knees up to his chest, and buried his head in despair, vaguely planning for the Battle round to come.

Eventually, the young trainer reached into his front scrubs pocket, and the wrong one, for when he searched for his Pokeballs, he instead brushed against something furry. Pulling it out, he realized it was the Spinda plushie he had won at the carnival earlier that day. The fluffy Panda Pokemon sent him through a mental montage of all the happy feelings from earlier, and holding them tenaciously along with the stuffed animal, he stalked back out to crowd, who had forgotten about him, and had their attention set on the next pair of contestants on the stage. Joey inched his way through the crowd virtually unnoticed, and came to stand next to Vincent, giving the boy a small wave in greeting, and receiving a quizzical look in return before the other boy's attention returned to the stage.

"Now unfortunately, I will not be battling you," said Mr. Contesta. "My Pokemon couldn't take all of you on. That'd be too much for them. So I'll pair you up and you'll battle your partner." Vincent discreetly inched closer to Joey, hoping they would be paired together. The last thing Vincent needed to do was embarass himself in front of a stranger. Joey would at least understand if Vincent did anything stupid. "Hmm... You! With the Spheal! You partner up with this young lady here." Vincent felt as though he had been caught in a crime when Mr. Contesta's fat little sausage finger pointed at him directly. He silently cursed his fate and solemnly met with his partner.

"HiI'mNicky! What'syourname?" The girl was unbelievably perky and spoke as though her sentences were a single word. She wore a pink cami, stonewashed skinny leg jeans and about twenty Silly Bandz on her right arm. "OMG! Is that a Spheal?? I have a Spheal Silly Band! You want one? I have just about every Pokemon there is, except for Chikorita. I've been looking like EVERYWHERE for a Chikorita but they don't sell it anywhere! ANYWHERE! It's crazy!" As Nicky babbled on about the elusive rubber band bracelet, Vincent took notice of the split ends on her flat-ironed hair. He took a couple steps back so he wouldn't be so close to the imperfection that hurt his retinas. "Oh yeah! We're supposed to be battling! It's a double battle right? I like double battles! They're so much fun! Imagine a TRIPLE battle! That'd be like really cool! I hear they do that in some other places but it's not very common here."

Vincent silently cursed again, wishing he had other Pokemon besides his Squirtle and Spheal. He loved Typhoon to death but the tiny turtle was such a handful. "Find some space and start whenever you're ready," Mr. Contesta instructed. "I'll be coming around the room to offer advice and critique. Remember that you are not only battling; you are performing. I apologize that we have to do it this way, but we took a little longer than expected with the Appeals."

Vincent sighed and turned his attention back to Nicky, who was now describing a new flavor of gum and how she fell in love with it. He attempted to interject but she never stopped talking. They were standing right in the middle of another pair's battle space. Vincent tried to watch for her breaths, hoping he could slip in a statement there, but her blabber was seemingly endless. He awkwardly smiled at the two trainers who were waiting for them to move. "Of course," he muttered to himself. "I end up with the annoying one."

"So I was like yeah and then she told me- OMG! You're wearing two watches! That's crazy!" Nicky exclaimed. "Lol, well Taylor didn't tell me that, she actually told me that it was a lie. But I just noticed that you're wearing two watches. That's so interesting! You're like a trend-setter! I'm gonna start wearing three watches! You better watch out! Lol! Did you get it? I said watch, like to look at stuff and we're talking about watches!"

Vincent looked to Heaven for help but the angels offered no help. He then took a deep breath and prepared himself emotionally for what he was about to do. "OMGliekthatiscrazy! You wanna like, go over and look at my watches? I got them at Juicy Couture." He said, adopting a valley girl accent. "This lighting like sucks and stuff. And there's a lamp over there."

"Wow I love Juicy! I didn't know they sold boy's stuff! Ok, let's go!"

He let out a sigh of relief and mentally patted himself on his back for his acting skills. Vincent and Nicky approached the vacant space by the lamp. Nicky was still going on about something but Vincent sent out Typhoon anyway, hoping she'd pick up on the fact that they should battle now. She did indeed, sending out her Taillow to accompany her Snubbull. Vincent never understood the appeal of a Sunbbull. It was not very cute at all, yet considered to be so. The two trainers spread out to commence the battle.

"Snubby-Wubby! Charm! Birdy-Boo! Focus Energy!" Nicky managed to command in the middle of her story of her boyfriend's birthday. Her two Pokemon did so, neither looking very into the battle. "Snubby-Wubby" was licking itself clean and "Birdy-Boo" was preening its feathers.

Vincent fought hard to keep a straight face when he heard her Pokemon's names. His disgust was very strong though. "Wally, use Encore on Taillow, then use Ice Ball and keep at it. Typhoon, use your Withdraw/Water Gun combination on Snubbull." Wally was giddy as he applauded loudly for the Taillow, trapping the bird into using Focus Energy over and over again. Vincent would have to take out the Taillow before it got the chance to attack, but Wally's Ice Ball was sure to take care of that. Typhoon withdrew into his shell, his posterior facing the enemy, and then used Water Gun, projecting himself right into the Snubbull's gut.

"That's not very nice!" Ignoring her virtually useless Taillow, Nicky commanded her Snubbull. "Thunder Fang on the fat thing!" She was now angry that the battle had turned against her favor in the first few moves. She even stopped talking!

"Tackle him, Typhoon!"

The Squirtle football tackled Nicky's Snubbull as it approached Wally, who was preoccupied aiming an Ice Ball at the Taillow that was fluttering about, focusing its energy. The maneuver did damage and saved Wally from an attack. Wally had already struck the Taillow with two Ice Balls and this last one was sure to knock it out.

"Bite, Typhoon! Bite!"

Typhoon was on top of Snubby-Wubby after the tackle. He chomped down on the Snubbull's side, causing the little bulldog to howl in pain. Nicky stamped her foot and yelled, "Bite him back, Snubby! No, not on the shell! Are you stupid??"

"Water Gun!"

Snubby was trying to bite Typhoon's front leg, which was retracted into his shell. Meanwhile, Typhoon gave him a faceful of water, blasting Snubby about 5 feet away from him. The Snubbull was able to get back up, but didn't have much fight left in him. If Vincent lived in some strange kind of universe where one's Pokemon's health was displayed in a bar and measured in points, Snubby's health bar would be very short, red and making an obnoxious sound that makes no contribution to the urgency of the situation. Just then, Wally cried in triumph as he successfully hit Birdy-Boo out of midair. The Tailow fell and landed right on top of Snubby, taking out the last of his health.

"Excellent work, again!" Mr. Contesta praised Vincent. Vincent hadn't even taken notice of the man watching the battle. "That attack combination with your Squirtle was quite clever. Your Spheal still lacks showmanship, but at least he's awake this time."

Vincent felt proud of himself and his Pokemon. If he recalled correctly, it was his first battle ever won. But then an unsettling thought occurred to him though. "What if there was some sort of author of our world? And he was composing every aspect of my life. He'd live in a separate universe and would control everything with a machine of sorts. He must hate writing battle scenes because they don't happen very often in my life."

As the battle round started with everyone getting paired up, Joey was paired with a girl dressed in a punkish outfit with a black high cut top and capri jeans rolled up to end below her knees. She had a bellybutton ring that showed on her fit midriff above her sparkling belt. Pink wrist and head bands completed her outfit and her Pokéballs were decorated in skull stickers. Joey instinctively took a tender-footed step back. She was chewing gum and snapped it obnoxiously while giving Joey a wink.

"Don't worry, little boy," she sneered, tossing her raven black hair that just brushed her shoulders. It was razor straight with a gentle curve to frame her face. "I'll go easy on you," she finished, tossing two Pokéballs deftly and elegantly from her fingertips, which spun gracefully into the air before releasing two Pokemon in a blast of smoke and electricity. Out of the smoke lumbered a sturdy looking Numel, while out of the electricity rolled a menacing Voltorb.

Little boy! Why I oughta... I'm probably older than she is!, Joey fumed internally. He figured the girl to be 15 or 16, but not too young to beat! Joey took his stance. Holding his two Pokéballs between his fingers, he quickly whipped them forward shouting, "Claw! Jet! We have a job to do!", and although he wanted to shout more about the punk girl, he held his words and set his face to calm determination. His Pidgey burst out of his ball looking focused and ready. Jet, however, showed energy only after a stretch and a yawn. No decorations heralded their entrance, for their myopic trainer lacked the foresight to put seals on their Pokéballs.

The girl quickly made the first move. "Voltorb! Get in front of Numel and start spinning!" The Voltorb obediantly did what it was told and started spinning in place, creating momentum and a slight barrier of motion around itself. Joey, quickly falling behind, racked his brain for a suitable combination, reminding himself that it had to be appealing and was unlike a regular battle. Thinking of nothing, the girl continued her onslaught while Joey's Pokemon remained where they were in the air and on the ground respectively.

"Numel, use your ember to blast Voltorb like a cannon!" The Numel solidified its stance and arched its neck, then threw it back as it released an ember behind the Voltorb, propelling the electric Pokemon forward, much like a cannon. The Numel looked so powerful and elegant while performing the Ember attack, Joey knew a yellow bar of points would be dropping on his side, just like in the video clips he saw today. The Voltorb that was hurtling through the air with a tail of fire started to glow brilliantly in a Charge attack. Using the Ember momentum, it kept moving forward in a Sonicboom, making a large ricochet noise that shook the walls as the Voltorb broke its own sound barrier and blasted against Claw, knocking the poor flyer out of the air in a screeching cry as he hit the ground.

The Voltorb landed behind Claw, the ember flames had now dissipated, but left a shiny sheen to the Voltorb's gleaming surface. Wasting no time, the Pokemon spun towards Jet upon its trainer's order to tackle, and it slammed into Jet with amazing speed. The girl taunted him with a wagging finger.

"And don't think that Ember hurt my Voltorb too much, " she cooed as her Voltorb rolled back to her and took its place next to Numel and smirked in Joey's direction. "The spinning propelled the flames away from him enough to deter damage, but were still a big boost to his cannon move." She tossed her hair again confidently.

Joey looked back to Claw, who managed to make it to his feet, and Jet, who was struggling a bit more, appearing unfocused. Claw twittered and clicked to Jet in his Pidgey language, and received a nod of recognition from the Seel, who then assumed a focused ready stance. Joey called to his Pokemon their next course of action.

"Jet, use Growl. Claw, use Sand-Attack, then Gust it over to your opponents. Jet, Headbutt through the sand and use it as a cover!" Joey thanked all divinities that his Pokemon hopped quickly to performing his battle commands. Jet tensed his sleek Seel body with a Growl attack that rippled his slick fur as it emerged and spread across the stage to the opponents that grimaced and slipped back. Claw went airborne again, but was barely off the ground as he kicked at the ground and flapped his wings, twirling his shoulders in great sweeping motions which showed off his form. Unfortunately, try as he might to pull off a Gust, the sand moved no further from in front of him than it began with, and he stumbled down to land awkwardly, windmilling and stepping back to regain his exhausted balance.

Jet saw this as his cue and Seel-flopped his way over to his battle partner, and quickly propelled himself through the falling sand barrier at an unexpected angle with a headbutt, his horn piercing the sand and creating a path for his body to follow through. Sand exploded beautifully around him and he landed the Headbutt attack on the Voltorb and spun to catch the Numel in a similar attack, which knocked it over and sent its partner flying. The poor Numel trapped on its side waved its stumpy legs in the air, struggling to grip some lose ground for a hope of friction. As it cried pathetically for help, the Voltorb recovered and spun back over to the Numel, and helped it back into a standing position. While the two Pokemon were smiling at each other, Joey noticed that while the initial Headbutt-through-sand maneuver looked appealing, it did nothing for Jet's after-sheen, as he now had gritty sand entwined in his Seely fur. Joey sighed and looked to Claw, who was panting with his wings and eyes wide in a spread-legged stance, trying to maintain standing.

"We're not finished yet! Numel! Voltorb! Let's do our Tackle Combo!" The girl didn't seem to be fazed in the least and her confidence flowed through to her Pokemon. The Numel responded to the command with renewed energy and reared up. Joey thought that was a little dramatic, until he realized why the Pokemon was doing so. The Voltorb spun around to the front of Numel and positioned himself underneath the shallow front end of the Numel and quickly spun the Pokemon up on top of him, and they balanced each other out, the Numel standing on the sneering Voltorb. Joey saw what they were going to do. While they worked out their slight balance issues, Joey dictated to his Pokemon.

"Jet, Claw," he got their attention, "Let's do the same thing!" Jet immediately tried to climb onto Claw, assuming he should be on top. The tired, underweight bird just as soon protested in a series of twists and squawks, trying to flip the annoying Seel off. Once he struggled the squirmy Seel beneath him, he bestowed a rally of pecks and scratches. Jet covered himself then threw a few well-placed Headbutts on Claw.

Joey kept up his calm exterior and only vocalized one firm word. "Stop". The two Pokemon froze in mid-strike upon one another and turned to look at their supposed trainer. Eye contact was made and Claw shook his head. Having enough of the Seel's nonsense, he clutched it by the tail and flapped vigorously, dragged it along the ground towards the two oncoming Pokemon, the Numel running backwards on the Voltorb surprisingly fast and the Voltorb spinning towards Joey's Pokemon. Bewildered, Jet grasped rather unsuccessfully at the ground with his feeble flippers, but in a last burst of energy the Pidgey pulled him off the ground, and slammed the poor Seel into the Numel, knocking it off the Voltorb in a cry of surprise.

The force had some other quick effects that all transpired within a few seconds. First of all, the Numel was knocked off, but Claw also dropped Jet due to the shock of the impact, and Jet fell in the line of the rolling Numel, and was promptly squashed. Having the sudden impact stop Claw, he fell out of the air and hit the ground behind the Voltorb, and the Voltorb was forced to backspin, since his momentum changed as the Numel's weight pulled back upon his falling off. He backspun directly over Claw, who cried out in pain then remained limp.

Unsure of what happened, the red and white Pokemon stopped spinning after steamrolling Claw and curiously looked around, being the least damaged in the incident. Its ally managed to struggle to a standing position, but then fell to its belly with its legs spread out around it, its head and neck touched ground and he didn't rise. Neither did Claw or Jet.

Bowing his head, Joey recalled his two Pokemon and started walking off to the healing station in an area away from the battles. The girl he just battled tried to stop him and talk, but he pointedly shrugged her off and kept walking, handing all three of his Pokemon to the Nurse Joy. She smiled and said that everyone loses once in awhile. He paid her little to no mind, but instead sat in a chair in the corner to watch the remainder of Vincent's match.

At least he's doing better than me, Joey thought.

BLARG

Typhoon and Wally did a victory dance together, celebrating their first triumph. Wally's shape made it difficult to do a dance of any kind, but he tried his hardest, which resulted in him rolling around with his flippers flailing about joyously.

"You're mean!" Nicky cried out while returning her Pokemon, apparently not a very good sportsman. She flipped her hair, put on a pair of sunglasses with lenses the size of CDs and walked out the door without saying another word. Peering out the window, Vincent noticed that the sun was beginning to set and sunglasses weren't at all necessary but he made no comment.

"I'm sorry..." he said, suddenly feeling some remorse.

Vincent approached Joey, who was observing the rest of the battles going on in the room. He seemed to be making mental notes for future refernce. "So how did it go?" Vincent asked.

"...Alright," Joey responded. "I think I did well for my first try." This quite obviously implied that it did not go "alright" but both boys were novices so it was understandable. "I saw the latter half of your battle. You did well."

"Thank you." Battles never gave Vincent much of a thrill, but he had to admit that it felt good to win. He felt bad having won though, because he didn't care much and Joey did. He was starting to feel awkward with his luck and priveledge beside someone who wasn't quite as lucky or priveledged. Vincent tried to get his mind off that uncomfortable feeling. "Hopefully this will wear those two out," he said, motioning towards his Pokemon who were still dancing. Wally had slowed down either because he was getting tired or getting dizzy or an unfortunate combination of fatigue and dizziness. Typhoon then took out his whistle and started blowing it. "Hey! Not in here!" Vincent said as he chased after his Squirtle.

"If we could all get our Pokemon under control, we'll finish up with the class now," Mr. Contesta said, speaking over the whistling particularly to Vincent, as he was the only one with a Pokemon who needed control. A few more minutes passed with everyone waiting on Vincent and he knew it. He felt the pressure of many eyes burning a million little holes in his body and Typhoon. Finally, he gave up and just returned Typhoon to his PokeBall. Vincent felt his cheeks burning red as he put the PokeBalll in his bag.

"That is all for our introductory course," said Mr. Contesta. "I hope that you will all go forth and use the information learned to take you to magnificent heights. Each and every one of you has the potential to do great things, whether it be in coordinating or any other field. For those of you who wish to learn some more before you set out on your adventure, we also have intermediate courses available here." The man went on to advertise every service the Practice Hall offered and included the respective price tags. Apparently, one could even book the Practice Hall for weddings and birthdays.

"And before you go," he continued. "We have a gift for your participation in the class." He disappeared through a nearby door and emerged a few seconds later with a box of Eevee puppies, which resulted in a few squeals from the teenage girls in the room. "Because each of you will be going in different directions, I thought an Eevee fitting. Besides Ditto, Eevee is perhaps the most versatile Pokemon."

Everyone crowded around the box, despite Mr. Contesta's attempts to make a single file line. Vincent made no attempt to shove his way through the crowd but dreaded the results of his inaction. What if they take all of them? What if Mr. Contesta miscounted and there aren't enough for me? But Vincent's worries were solved when a puppy emerged through the hustle and bustle of the anxious coordinators. The Eevee found shelter from the chaos by Vincent's legs, hiding between them.

Vincent smiled and reached to pick up the scared puppy, but it ran away, heading towards a table with a pile of accessories on top. The Eevee bumped into the leg of the table, causing a mountain of accessories to fall on top of it. Vincent rushed to help the Eevee, but it emerged unscathed, now donning a helmet much too large for its little head and a few colorful flowers. Vincent smiled and tried to be conscious of his body language. He kneeled on his haunches and held his arms out invitingly, hoping the Eevee wouldn't be as intimidated.

The Eevee just stared at Vincent for a few seconds and then began backing away. However, it bumped into the same table leg, knocking down a platter of poffins which made a loud clang when it collided with the floor. The Eevee ran straight into Vincent's arms and was comforted by a gentle hug.

"Amazon." Vincent took notice of the puppy's gender and immediately decided on a name. "Your name will be Amazon." It seemed to suit the female warrior Eevee quite well. He got up and turned around to find Joey reaching for the last puppy in the box.

Sweet Team

Everyone rushed to choose their Eevee, hoping to get the best pick of the litter. While the shorter than average boy was being elbowed aside and run over, Joey vaguely wondered where all the classy etiquette, supposedly a defining characteristic of these high society coordinator types, disappeared to. When he finally made it to the front due to a lessened crowd, he came upon the only thing he possibly could have: the last available Eevee, obviously everyone else’s reject as they choose different specimens each and every time until only the lazily sleeping puppy was left.
It went from a curled up napping position to rolling over and sticking its legs in the air when Joey reached down and picked it up underneath its arm. Looking sleepily at him, the young Pokemon yawned cutely and sighed, “Eeee…vee,” and smacked its chops together, waking up.

When Joey looked down at the pampered, puppy-like Pokemon he now deigned to call his own, he felt an indescribable, undeniably dark feeling rise within him. This Eevee was the elaborately framed picture of the affluent society that he wondered if he could ever feel a part of, and he knew he had to ruin it. Ruin it or forfeit sanity. Ruin it in the name of all he never had. Ruin it in the name of the muddled blood of his family line that dredged along the underbelly of society in Pyrite Town, the Desert region of Orre.

The perfect way of completing travesty came to him like a lit candle, or in this case like the onslaught of strobe lights.

~Cue Flashback~

In Pyrite Town, in a tucked away place called The Under, questionable night clubs existed to seduce the less virtuous sides of humankind, and quite frankly, in all the regions in existence, they couldn’t have chosen a better place.

One particular night club attracted Joey in an inexplicable way that he was partially ashamed. The part of him that wasn’t ashamed was still too innocent to comprehend. It was fairly easy to get in, as bouncers were considered superfluous in such an environment. Joey could still remember his heart pounding as he would sometimes sneak there after work in the in the overpriced, dilapidated hotel. The feeling of betraying rules and enjoying the forbidden was still coursing through his veins.

Although there were no morals, and he was well aware that there were kids younger than him involved in such happening, there was still an intangible, unspoken structure, some inner pull, some logical fear about going to such a place. All the possible horrible things, all the possible horrible deaths that could befall him in such a place spun through his head, and yet his feet still pulled him further into the dregs of society.

This particular nightclub was called Babylon, and was a gathering place for people to shed any last shred of decency while inhibitions were discarded upon the dance floor and washed away by the glaring strobe lights. The music pounded them away at last, and while it no longer outpaced Joey’s racing heart, it provided a basic guideline, an agenda, to the evening of the night club and all its desperate participants seeking an escape to their increasingly hopeless lives.

Eventually, it became easier and easier to sneak back there and observe all it had to offer. At that time, it was a treasure to young Joey, a fountain of knowledge. Knowledge, about the human spirit and how they treat each other, that eventually became the foundation of Joey’s morals bred in that room of strobe lights and obnoxiously loud music. The young boy never strayed far from the corners as he didn’t want to be noticed, but he was the perfect ghost to witness every negative human action ever imagined possible, and even some unimaginable, with wide and observant eyes...

Back in the present day practice Contest Hall, Joey rested his hand against the Eevee’s smiling head and greeted him with an edge in his voice.

“Hello, Babylon,” he breathed, “Welcome to the insanity."

The two boys Joey and Vincent rushed through the darkened Barley streets, breathing rapidly through the slight evening chill as they approached the harbor. The Starlight Cruise ship was still docked, and they were going to make it. Joey was panting hard when they reached it, but they boarded with no problem and made their way to their assigned cabins.

Flopping on the bed to catch his breath, Joey did a pack and Pokemon check. Having everything, he sighed and relaxed while Vincent sat in the desk chair. He laughed as he said to Joey, “Well, we finally made it. Fidona or bust?”
Joey leaned back against the pillow and agreed. “Fidona or bust. But first, a nap is in order.”

Joey drifted off to sleep, and Vincent pulled out his book "Of Mice and Men" that he had bought in the store. Releasing Wally and placing the baby on the bed for a nap, Vincent turned to the last chapter in his book and finished reading it before dawn. Jet released himself from his Pokeball, stretched, and went over to nap with Wally, curling around him. Both Pokemon sighed contentedly and drifted off to sleep as well.
